Out and about in Breda with Sonja

There are few cities in the Netherlands that are as bustling as Breda. Breda is truly a lively student city where there is plenty to see and do. But even if you are not a student, this city is wonderful to visit. I was recently in Breda and take you along to the highlights of this cozy city.
On a scooter?
Of course, you can explore the city in many different ways. You can walk, of course, but you can also…. by scooter! At Beleef Breda you can see a lot of the city in a relatively short time. We did it with a company outing, but it is also possible with a bachelor party or with a group of girlfriends. There are a lot of different activities to choose from. For example, you can take a group out on the water with a boat, you can rent a tandem or play city games. We went for the pub crawl on the scooter, taking in four different pubs and the park. Everywhere we were given an assignment. At one pub we played 30 Seconds, passing an object in a special way, we did karaoke and in the park we scooted a relay race.
Scooting through the center on a Saturday afternoon is quite exciting, but everything went well. No one got hurt, neither the colleagues nor the shoppers.
Happy shopping
Shopping is great in Breda! You can find the regular bigger chain stores, but there are also many boutiques where you can get clothes that are just that little bit different from others. De Barones is the most famous shopping area. It is covered, so even with less weather you can spend some time there. But for the really nice stores you go to the Ginnekenstraat (tip: Casa Maria!), Veemarktstraat and the Halsstraat. But don’t forget the Tolbrugstraat and ‘t Sas if you’re looking for special things. Tired of all the shopping? Breda has many terraces where you can relax and admire your purchases.
On the terrace
Of course you can have a drink on the Grote Markt. There the terraces are quickly full when the weather is nice! For beer lovers Zeezicht is highly recommended. For those who love tapas as well as drinks, De Markt is the right place. Het Voske has been a household name in Breda for more than 85 years and you immediately feel at home. The terrace of Café de Suikerkist is large and very cozy! Paviljoen de Colonie is also on the Grote Markt and is a place where you can have a delicious high tea! Of course there are many more nice terraces where you can sit down, but Breda has so much more fun!
Away from the crowd
If you have been walking all day in the hustle and bustle, it is quite nice to find a quieter spot. Stadspark Valkenberg is an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a very orderly park, nice and green and with slightly sloping paths. Here you are really among the locals who just walk the dog, teach the kids to ride bikes or just sit in the grass or on a bench. Do you like the forest more? Then the Mastbos is definitely a wonderful place to refuel. This ancient forest is located against the city of Breda, so suddenly you are in the middle of greenery. There are all kinds of hiking trails that run right through the forest. There is also a 7-kilometer Boswachterspad where you can encounter all kinds of animals. The starting point of the Boswachterspad is at Café de Kogelvanger where you can have a nice snack and drink afterwards.
Going out in Breda
Breda is a real city of nightlife. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to dive into the pub, because there are plenty of other fun things to do. We combined dinner and entertainment with a dinner show at Theater De Avenue! We were of course with a large party in a private room, but you can already go there with a smaller couple. You can then join a dinner show in the main hall. In fact, there are all kinds of dinner shows to choose from. We had the show Vivencia where from the main course the feet went off the floor regularly. The food was also delicious! This really is a complete night out. A blog especially about The Avenue will follow soon, so keep an eye on us!
Sleeping in Breda
You can of course visit Breda for 1 day, but actually there is so much to see and do, that sleeping there for a night is also very nice. During our stay we slept in the centrally located Golden Tulip Keyser Breda. This beautiful hotel is very centrally located so you can be in the center in no time. But you are also at the Station in no time. The Apollo Hotel Breda City Center is also very centrally located and super modern. Also very nice is the Bliss Boutique Hotel in Breda. This hotel has nine luxury suites that are so nice that you actually prefer to stay in your room.
Nice and active
The next morning we soon left the hotel for the next fun activity: bowling! We went to do that a little outside the center at Vierhoog . Besides bowling, you can also go laser gaming and there is also an escaperoom. Vierhoog is in an industrial area, but you have everything you need within easy reach. Downstairs is a very large Italian restaurant, next door is a McDonald’s and opposite is a Kinepolis cinema. Ideally located! Everyone was still a bit tired from the previous day, so we did not play bowling fanatically. But it was fun!
