The Hague coast is one of the most dog-friendly beaches in South Holland. On this side of The Hague, you don’t have to keep your dog on a leash on a large portion of the beach—all year round. Good to know before you go: exactly where can your dog run free, and which beach bars welcome him or her on the patio?

Off-leash all year round at beach access point 2

The widest stretch where dogs can run free is at Beach Access Point 2, at the end of the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan parking lot. From here, your dog can run free day and night, all year round, all the way south to the border with the municipality of Westland. This stretch runs along the Zandmotor, where the beach is extra wide. So there’s plenty of space to take a few nice sprints or play fetch without getting in the way of other beachgoers. Handy: you can park, walk, and relax all in the same spot here. Let your dog run off some energy first, then head straight to the patio at Birds, Flamingo’s, or Blow—all three just a stone’s throw away.

Two more places to run

On the north side of Zuiderstrand, your dog can also run off-leash year-round, between beach access point 9 (Kwartellaan) and beach access point 10 (Duiverlandsestraat). And on the other side of Kijkduin, on Noorderstrand, the same applies from the beach access point at the Zwarte Pad parking lot all the way to the border with Wassenaar. That makes three off-leash areas, spread out along the entire coastline.

The rest of Zuiderstrand

Outside these three sections, seasonal rules apply to the rest of the Zuiderstrand. From October 1 to May 15, your dog may run off-leash here all day. In the summer, from May 15 to October 1, this is only allowed in the evening and at night, between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM. So during the day in high season, you’ll need to put your dog on a leash again. Please also note: dogs must be on a leash in the dunes, and picking up after your dog is mandatory on the entire beach, including the off-leash areas. If you walk your dog off-leash between the parking lot and the beach, you risk a fine. The municipality’s official rules page does not specify an amount, but at the time of our last check (September 15, 2026), fines of around €150 were being cited for allowing a dog to run off-leash without permission. To be on the safe side, check this yourself, as these amounts are subject to change. Parking on Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan is free, by the way.

If you take a walk along this part of the beach—for example, toward beach entrance 5— Beachclub Titus is a great spot to relax, with its own water and snack bowl for your dog.

Look at your dog—he really can keep going for a long time. But for the owner, there’s a wide selection of ways to unwind. Fortunately, at Kijkduin, you don’t have to go to a different patio because your dog isn’t welcome. Birds, Flamingo’s, and Blow—all three located at beach access point 2 on the dog beach—welcome your dog on their patios year-round. Beachclub Titus, a little further down at beach access point 5, goes the extra mile by providing its own water and snack bowls for your dog.

Whether you’re taking a long walk along the Zandmotor, getting some fresh air on Noorderstrand, or settling down at one of the patios: Your dog is welcome everywhere along The Hague’s coast.
