12 Fun Outings in Delft with the Kids

Delft may be known for its beautiful canals, historic buildings, and, of course, the famous Delft Blue, but did you know that this charming city also has tons of fun places for kids? From adventure-filled museums and creative workshops to great playgrounds, kid-friendly restaurants, and hidden gems where you can easily spend an afternoon. Whether the sun is shining or it’s a rainy day, there’s always something new to discover in Delft. We’ve rounded up the best outings and activities for a fun day out with the whole family!

Discover the world of technology at the TU Delft Science Center

Do you have a curious little inventor at home? Then the TU Delft Science Center is highly recommended. Here, kids get to explore, build, and experiment on their own. From robots to science experiments: learning has never been this much fun. It’s also a great spot for kids’ parties—they get to take their own creations home afterward. A really fun tip for kids ages 6 and up.

Paint Your Own Delft Blue Tile

A visit to Royal Delft is much more fun than you might think. In addition to the museum, there are regular children’s workshops where kids can paint their own Delft Blue tile. There are also fun scavenger hunts through the museum. An original souvenir and a creative afternoon all in one.

Cuddling with animals at BuytenDelft

Kids almost always love animals. At the BuytenDelft city farm, they can pet goats, feed the animals, and then play to their hearts’ content in the brand-new water playground right next door. Be sure to bring swimwear or a change of clothes when the weather is warm! A visit to the city farm is free, but there’s a fee of €35.50 per person (ages 2 and up) for the water playground.

“Het Verloren Strandje” Playground

You’ll find the Verloren Strandje Playground on Wilgenlaan. This nature playground opened in early 2026 thanks to the initiative of (among others) local residents and Jantje Beton. The playground is beautifully designed, primarily using natural materials. The mini-beach with shallow water invites children to romp around, explore, and play carefree. There’s a fire pit for making campfires (under supervision) and a box containing dip nets, magnifying glasses, and identification charts. Parents can keep a close eye on their children from one of the benches.

Exploring the Historic City Center

Give the children a scavenger hunt map or create your own treasure hunt along the canals, little bridges, and old buildings. Who will be the first to spot a stork, a windmill, or a Delft Blue tile? That’s how a city stroll suddenly turns into an adventure. Of course, there are also companies that offer fun scavenger hunts through Delft’s city center. For example, we did a scavenger hunt from Stad Unique for a children’s party. But you can do that even when there’s nothing special to celebrate.

Visit the Hortus Botanicus

Want to escape the hustle and bustle for a bit? In the botanical garden at TU Delft, you’ll discover unique plants, butterflies, and colorful flowers. Fun children’s activities are also organized regularly. It’s a wonderful spot for curious nature lovers. A great place to visit with older children. Or, if you’re with younger children, visit De Heemtuin Delft. This arboretum is home to many different trees and plants and pairs perfectly with a visit to the Buytendelft city farm.

Picnicking in the park

Sometimes a day out doesn’t have to be complicated at all. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and find a nice spot in the Delftse Hout or in one of the city parks, such as Agnetapark or Nieuwe Plantage. Bring a ball, some bubble solution, and your afternoon is set. Prefer not to picnic but still want to enjoy a cozy lunch with the kids? Then head to Knus, right in the heart of the Delftse Hout. To make it even more fun, rent a pedal boat in the summer or go ice skating in the winter.

Lunch and Play at BijEssie

Imagine: it’s raining, but you still want to get out for a bit with the kids. Then BijEssie is a great idea. This kids’ play café is the perfect outlet for energetic children ages 0 to 9, and you can relax for a bit and enjoy a cup of coffee, a tasty breakfast, or a delicious lunch. Meanwhile, the kids will have a great time in the play area or the arts-and-crafts room. So it’s a great place for everyone to recharge.

Enjoy a fun movie

This tip is perfect for when it’s raining, but also if you just want to escape the heat for a bit: an afternoon at the movies. Pathé Delfton Vesteplein has 7 theaters, so there’s sure to be a movie that will make the kids happy. Grab some tasty snacks and drinks, and you’ve got a wonderful outing!

Browsing for books at the library

DOK is Delft’s premier youth library. The children’s section is divided into three themed areas, so kids of all ages can comfortably browse for a book. During school breaks, they always organize fun activities like learning to code and toddler reading sessions.  A DOK membership is even free for those up to age 27! You’ll find DOK in OPEN on Vesteplein, but there’s also a library in Voorhof and in Tanthof.

Rent an electric boat

Want to see Delft from the water? You can! Rent an electric boat with the whole family and cruise through Delft’s charming canals. You can rent a boat for as little as 2 hours, which is often plenty of time for young children. Afterward, grab a delicious ice cream in town, and you’ll have a fantastic day!

High Tea with Your (Teen) Daughter

Looking for a chic outing with your (teenage) daughter? How about high tea at Bakker Suikerbuik! Enjoy delicious food served on beautiful tableware while having a cozy chat about everything that’s on your daughter’s mind. There’s even a special Kids’ High Tea with lemonade instead of tea. This high tea can only be reserved with two adults. It’s a fun activity to do with a friend and her daughter!
