A great place to stay for a short vacation in Zeeland

Friday afternoon, the car is packed, and the kids are already arguing over who gets to pick the good music. Somewhere past Rotterdam, the sky starts to change. Wider. Lighter. And then we pull up the driveway, and I remember. This is exactly why we’re here. It had been three years since we first booked a luxury vacation home in Zeeland for a long weekend. We didn’t know the resort, were barely familiar with the area, and really had no expectations. That all changed on the very first evening.

How a First Evening Became a Tradition

We’d booked the Orchis Wellness, a house for six people with a sauna and hot tub. I’d expected something rather plain—a vacation home like so many others. But it felt right right away. Space. Silence. A terrace where you can just sit without feeling like the neighbors are watching.

That first evening, we sat outside as it slowly grew dark. No one reached for their phone. We ate too late, drank too much wine, and talked about everything and nothing. That’s what I remember from that first time. Not the amenities, not the pool. Just that terrace and that evening.

In the morning, we walked to the park’s own bakery for fresh rolls. The kids discovered the fishing pond. We discovered that it’s very easy to do nothing here—and that’s exactly enough. That Saturday, we collectively decided to skip the pool and just stay on the terrace. No one had any objections.

The great thing about this park is that you can really get out and about. Zeeland is right around the corner, and you can tell. We cycled along the Oosterschelde, ate mussels in Yerseke, and spent an afternoon in Middelburg without it feeling like a major expedition. Back in the evening, shoes off, feet up.

At Hof van Zeeland, they call it a “base,” and that’s exactly right. You have a place to fall back on. A place that’s waiting for you. That gives a completely different feeling than a hotel where you just rent a room and nothing else. We always came back toward the end of the afternoon, just in time to eat outside as the light slowly faded.

The second time, we rented e-scooters for an afternoon. The kids thought they were doing something really cool. So did we, to be honest. We rode through the polder paths and along the water, stopped at a stall for fresh shrimp, and came back with sandy shoes and high spirits.

Why we’ve booked this place for the third time

Last year, I hesitated for a moment. Maybe I should try something different. I looked around, compared options, and read reviews. And then I booked the same place again. Not out of habit, but because I knew what I’d be getting.

A house with plenty of space. A setting that doesn’t impose itself but is simply there. And that feeling on the driveway, that Friday afternoon, when the sky seems wider and the kids stop arguing because they, too, sense that things are different here.

We’re going again this year. Same resort, probably the same house. The kids asked for it themselves—which says it all. Sometimes the best choice is simply the one you already know.
