One of the easiest and most fun ways to spend time with your kids in nature is a hike. Not only is it great to enjoy the fresh air outside, you can also teach your kids a thing or two while hiking! Teach your kids about nature and the animals that live in their environment. For example, by feeding birds! We give you some tips for an educational and fun way to feed birds during your wonderful walk.

Bird friendly food

First, it is important to mention that you should be very careful about what kind of food you want to give to the birds. Birds are not humans and have a completely different diet. Avoid processed and/or salted foods. Bread is also bad for birds. Definitely keep this in mind! Make sure you buy bird-friendly food. For example, take a look at vogelvoerkopen.nl, then you can be sure that you are right. You can explain to your children right away why it is important that some types of food, including bread, are not good for birds.

Different bird species

Of course, there are many kinds of little birds flying around during the walk. How fun is it if your kids recognize these little birds by their colors and sounds! There are a lot of bird guides and nowadays also different apps with which you can identify birds. Huge fun and educational for your little ones. While you make the birds happy with a tasty snack, you can let your kids try to identify the birds. For example, let them look for blackbirds, robins or great tits. This way they will learn more about the different types of birds in the Netherlands and the behavior they exhibit. Who knows, maybe they will have a talent for bird watching!

Who will spot the most birds?

Children love games. How fortunate that you can come up with a game for almost anything, even especially during bird feeding! Make it a fun activity by having a bird watching contest, for example. Instruct your kids to spot as many birds as possible, or just one particular species of bird. This will ensure that the walk becomes incisive and children are consciously engaged with the nature around them.

Plenty of birds spotted and fed

Bird watching and feeding is still fun, but to keep it interesting for the kids, too, you can combine it with other activities. Think about collecting leaves or flowers. Again, there is a lot to learn about the species, colors and nature. Or go a step further: looking for animal tracks! Turn your children into real Freek Vonkjes and develop a passion for nature. In any case, there are endless possibilities of activities you can do besides bird feeding! This keeps the walk interesting and allows children to connect with the oh so beautiful nature in different ways!
