Discover the historic center of Maastricht

Maastricht is one of those cities that instantly captures your heart. With its rich history, charming streets and beautiful old buildings, it feels like going back in time, but with all the modern conveniences of today. Whether for a day or a weekend, there is so much to do and see in the beautiful historic center. In this blog, we will take you on a tour in advance.
The world famous Vrijthof Square
When you think of Maastricht, you think of the Vrijthof. This square is perhaps the most famous in the city. With a delicious cup of coffee on one of the many terraces, you have a beautiful view of the imposing Saint Servatius Basilica and the Saint John’s Church with its distinctive red tower. The Vrijthof is also the cultural heart of Maastricht. Throughout the year there are events, from concerts (for example by André Rieu) to cozy Christmas markets. And at night it is absolutely beautiful here with the atmospherically lit buildings.
The Saint Servatius Basilica
At the edge of the Vrijthof is the Basilica of Saint Servatius. This Romanesque church is not only beautiful to admire from the outside, but impressive inside with its religious art and history. The highlight? The treasury, where you can see an impressive collection of medieval relics, including the sarcophagus of Saint Servatius himself. Even if you’re not a huge history buff, this is highly recommended. The serene atmosphere and beautiful light through the stained glass windows make this a special experience.
The Helpoort, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands
Did you know that Maastricht has the oldest city gate in the Netherlands? The Helpoort dates from the 13th century and is still standing proudly. It’s great to walk through this gate and imagine for a moment how this used to be an important entrance to the city. For the real history buffs: inside the Helpoort is a small museum where you can learn more about the medieval city walls and the history of Maastricht as a fortified city.
Dominican Church, a bookstore in a church
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary sights in Maastricht: the Dominicanenkerk. This former church has been transformed into an impressive bookstore and is often mentioned as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Whether you like reading or not, this place is definitely worth a visit. The vaults, ancient frescoes and serene atmosphere will make you feel like you’re in another world for a while. Tip: Don’t forget to have a coffee in the café, located right on the old altar!
City walks through narrow streets
The historic center of Maastricht invites you to enjoy wandering around its narrow streets. If you love shopping, the Stokstraat Quarter is the place for you. This charming neighborhood is known for its exclusive boutiques, luxury brands and cozy cafes such as Maison Louis, Steiner, Schaap en Citroen and DARQ Maastricht. But even if you’re not a big shopaholic, it’s fun to stroll through the narrow streets. The beautiful, restored buildings and the atmosphere of yesteryear make you feel like you’re walking in another era. A tip: book a city guide or walk an online city tour. That way you will learn all about the hidden stories the city harbors.

The Wyck neighborhood, on the other side of the Meuse River, is very popular with shoppers. This part of town has its own unique atmosphere with beautiful old buildings and a unique mix of fashion, design and delicatessen stores. For example, Nina’s Boutique, BieZoe Accessories, Concept store De Verwondering and Soldes Boutique.
Traditional Limburg flan at the Bisschopsmolen
For a truly authentic experience, make a stop at the Bisschopsmolen. This mill, right in the center, is the oldest working water mill in the Netherlands and spelt flour is still ground here in the traditional way. In the accompanying bakery, you can enjoy delicious fresh Limburg flan. It is not only delicious, but also a piece of culture to taste!
Sleeping in a monastery at the Kruisherenhotel
