Let's go to the beach!

When you think of the beach, you may not easily think of Ter Heijde. Maybe you’ve never even heard of Strand Ter Heijde! High time to change that, because this Westland beach between Hoek van Holland and Scheveningen, is friendly, quiet and parking is free. And here you’ll find Makani Beach, a beach club where it’s great to hang out.

Nice and quiet!

We visited Makani Beach by invitation. Since our vacation had just started, we thought this was the perfect place to start the vacation! We already knew Ter Heijde, but it had been years since we had been there. What I remembered was that it was wonderfully quiet, even on a beautiful day! Very different from Scheveningen, where you sometimes have trouble finding a spot for your towel. On the Saturday we visited Makini Beach, the weather was fine. There were some clouds, but in terms of temperature it was fine. And when the sun broke through, it was really lovely. There was a strong breeze, so there was plenty of surfing and kite surfing. So there was plenty to see as well!

Reaching beach Ter Heijde

You will find Makani Beach at beach entrance Karel Doormantrap. The beach tent is on the right, right next to the stairs. A paved path makes access easy, even for people who have difficulty walking or are in wheelchairs. When parking, be careful: street parking is for permit holders only. But there is a large parking lot next to the rescue team. You can park here all day for free. Of course, the beach is also easy to reach by bicycle. The route through Westland is also great fun to bike!

Makani Beach

Makini Beach is open from April through October. In 2022, Makini Beach was taken over by Miranda Hanemaaijer. For her, this was a dream come true. Miranda worked as a cooking teacher at a catering school and in addition to her passion for cooking, she also has a passion for kitesurfing. Makani Beach, formerly Jamm Beach, is located next to Dreams Surfschool. The choice to start a new catering adventure there was not difficult for Miranda. She is basically always on the beach, either kitesurfing or walking the dog. Dog Luna was happily scurrying around at Makani Beach. She clearly enjoyed all the attention and the kids love her!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

You can visit Makani Beach for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, you can enjoy drinks with fine wines and tasty appetizers. We came there for lunch. Our son went for the croquettes on bread from the Haagse Croquetterij and we went for a club sandwich with chicken and a beef carpaccio sandwich. Around us it was getting a little busier and busier. People who had had a surf lesson at Dreams Surfschool slid onto the terrace for lunch or people stopped by for a nice drink after a walk on the beach. Behind the scenes, so out of the wind, it was fine! Makani, by the way, means “wind” in Hawaiian.

Makani Beach

Also for weddings and parties!

At Makani Beach they do love a party! So it is a perfect place for (company) parties and you can even get married there! For example, you can combine a team building outing with a surf lesson. Everything is organized to perfection. Check out thewebsite for more information.

Clean beach

In 2021, Ter Heijde was declared one of the cleanest beaches in the Netherlands. Makani Beach likes to contribute to that as well. When you go for a walk on the beach, you can pick up a beach bag at Makani Beach. In this bag you collect garbage from the beach during your walk. You bring your full beach bag back to Makani and get a free cup of coffee, tea or ice cream as a reward! A win-win action then, because it’s good for the environment too!

Real enjoyment

The lunch was delicious and our son had a great time on the beach and in the water. Makani Beach is really a place where you can enjoy a day by the sea without rushing. Afterwards we had a nice walk on the beach. The waves were perfect for surfers and kitesurfers and just when we were there a group of young kids were getting lessons. Super fun to watch! We will definitely be back!
