We previously wrote blog about fun outings and activities in Limburg. This time we zoom in on Valkenburg. Because although this place has only 10,000 inhabitants, it is a popular destination among tourists. This is because Valkenburg not only has a beautiful center with a picturesque atmosphere, but also because there is a lot to do in Valkenburg and its surroundings. Nature, culture, sports activities and, above all, lots of fun.

Discover the castle ruins and the Velvet Cave

One of Valkenburg’s most famous attractions is, of course, the Kasteelruïne. This once imposing castle dates back to the 11th century and offers stunning views of the city. Take a walk through the ruins, learn more about its history at the nearby museum and enjoy some tasty treats at Rooftop Bar Tash, the new restaurant at the foot of Valkenburg’s Kasteelruïne.

Right next to the Castle Ruin is the entrance to the Velvet Cave. The Velvet Cave is one of the oldest caves in Limburg. In this marl cave you will discover ancient stories, wall drawings and sculptures, all carved into the soft marl stone. A special detail is that the cave is connected to the Castle Ruin via medieval escape passages.

And if you visit Valkenburg in winter, the Christmas market in the Velvet Cave is a must-see. The atmosphere, the lights, and the coziness make it magical. You can buy handmade gifts, drink hot drinks and enjoy live music. The underground Christmas market is there from November 16 to December 30!

You can buy tickets for just the Castle Ruin or a combination ticket for both the Ruin and the Velvet Cave.

Strolling around the center

The center of Valkenburg is very charming that is full of nice boutiques and souvenir stores. Here you can find local products and gifts to take home. But also all the restaurants and terraces give Valkenburg a very atmospheric look. Especially on and around the Grotestraat Centrum you will find plenty of nice and atmospheric terraces. There is always a piece of cosiness to be found here.

Cycling and walking in the immediate vicinity of Valkenburg

Nature lovers will enjoy the Geul Valley. This nature reserve lies just outside the center of Valkenburg and is the perfect place for a relaxing walk through the Limburg countryside. The rippling waters of the Geul, green meadows and rolling hills provide picturesque views. There are several well-marked hiking trails, from short walks to somewhat longer treks. Bring a picnic or take a break at one of the cozy outdoor cafes in the area.

The sports enthusiasts among us probably know that the Cauberg is the hill that is very popular among cyclists. It is a tough climb, but the satisfaction when you reach the top is more than worth it! Rent a bike in Valkenburg and take up the challenge, or choose one of the many other beautiful cycling routes in the area. Don’t feel like cycling up the hill yourself? No problem!!! You can also drive your car to the top and enjoy the view.

Would you like to relax? Then Thermae 2000 is highly recommended! This wellness center is located on the Cauberg and offers a beautiful view of the surroundings. Enjoy the thermal baths, saunas and great wellness treatments. Take the time to enjoy a massage or facial. This way you’ll really make a wellness day of it. The view from the outdoor pools is fantastic, especially at sunset.

Taste Limburg specialties

No visit to Valkenburg is complete without sampling some local delicacies. Limburg is known for its Burgundian cuisine, and in Valkenburg you will find plenty of cozy restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy regional dishes. Think Limburg flan, sour meat, and of course a good glass of beer from a local brewery. Stop by a flan bakery Bridge & Bakker Edo and enjoy baker Edo’s artisanal flans or one of the other homemade treats in their Brasserie.
