At Villa Zebra children get in touch with contemporary visual art in a playful way. This unique children’s museum for children from 2 to 12 years old is located in Rotterdam. Villa Zebra stimulates the imagination, creativity and curiosity of children through workshops and educational material. All based on their own Villasophy!
Art for everyone
Everyone interprets art in his or her own way. One person sometimes sees something different in it than the other. And that’s not a bad thing at all, indeed! At Villa Zebra they encourage children to look at art in their own way and to create art themselves.
Nothing must and everything is allowed, so even not very creative children feel at home.
The Villasophy
At Villa Zebra, there is no right or wrong. In the Villasophy, they put interaction with art at the center, in addition to exploration and curiosity. It is not about the work of art itself, but about what that art can bring about. Art requires an open attitude, an open approach. It can turn your world upside down and create something “unthought of.” What arises in the head can be moved to the hands and from there the most beautiful creations arise.
You can also apply Villasophy outside the museum, in everyday life. Dare to think outside the box and don’t judge too quickly. Then together we can create a world in which unexpected things can and may happen.
Playing
For the little ones, the first floor is a big play paradise. Children can have hours of fun with the life-size dollhouse, enjoy building at the construction tables, quietly read books or play, look around and have fun at the exhibition “Self!” These interactive art installations encourage imagination, language development, motor skills and creativity. For parents, this is just as fun because they get to join in the exploration. A short, fun workshop can be followed afterwards.
Different exhibitions
Villa Zebra makes sure that children stay challenged, so the exhibitions change regularly. Until March 2020 children from 7 years on can discover all kinds of things in the exhibition “The Kitchen Garden”. Of course, this is no ordinary vegetable garden, there’s all kinds of things going on with it. There is also a fun workshop for older children where parents are not allowed to watch. This gives the children extra freedom to use their own creativity.
Klooimiddiddagen
Every month Villa Zebra organizes a klooimiddag. During such an afternoon children are free to work with different materials. Really an afternoon of being creative. There are also reading afternoons organized in which a different picture book is always central.
This is followed by a short workshop on the same theme.
Party!
Organize a creative children’s party! Make your child’s birthday extra special by letting them roll up their sleeves themselves. Children up to age 6 can choose from two fun themes: Caveman and Circus Party. For children 7 years and older, Villa Zebra organizes a fun party. Here the children are faced with a dilemma because how do you distract snails so they stay away from your vegetable garden?
Also for schools and BSOs
Schools and BSOs are also welcome at Villa Zebra, but that’s not all! They also visit the schools! The teachers provide visual arts lessons at various schools in Rotterdam. There is an extensive offer for children of all ages. This keeps it challenging and fun. They like to share their expertise, so they also give trainings and courses to teachers and others.
