Walk op Horrors Haarlem (5)

Explore a city in a unique way and discover the dark side of your chosen city. During this city walk you will visit special places from history where it is haunted, creepy events have taken place and you will learn more about the sometimes bloody history of the city or place. Guest blogger Elize went on this walk in Haarlem and reports.

How does it work?

Through the website www.thelittlewalkofhorror.nl you choose in which city you want to do the walk. You then receive a package at home containing the route description and a booklet with information about the places you walk along. You do this walk independently; that is, there are no actors, no guide or scenery. So you can choose how many people you do the walk with, where you take breaks if necessary, where you eat and/or drink something, whether you visit a museum in between, etc. You decide after receiving your package when you go, with whom, what time and how long you take.

Who is this fun for?

The answer is for anyone who wants to discover the city in a different way, for those who are curious about the dark side of a city, for those who find history interesting and for those who want to do something unique.

It is fun to do with colleagues as a team outing, for friends, for families with older children (about 12 ) or other compositions. It is possibly possible to do this route with smaller children, if the distance of 4-7 km can be covered. You can then ask them, for example, to help look for certain buildings and not or partially share the stories behind them.

Our experience

Unique outings I am always up for and discovering (new) cities or places too! We have done an escape tour of the city, light walks and a cocktail walk before. So I was very curious about this one!

First, we went to the website of the Little Walk of Horror to pick a city where we would do the walk. There are nice cities listed, including some abroad. The choice was difficult because there are many nice cities between them, but finally chose Haarlem. We visited this city years ago and found it a very nice city then, so were curious to discover this city in a different way!

We received the package quickly, but because of the summer vacations it took a little longer before we finally went on the walk. All this time the package was lurking on the table looking at me, but I didn’t want to spoil the surprise by opening it already. In the end, with much effort, I succeeded 😉

And then it was finally here! We agreed with friends to do the walk together. My kids are still a little smaller, so we thought it was more appropriate to do the city walk with friends. in the morning we opened the package, and what a nice package it was! A gift to unwrap. Inside the box was a bill, a sealed envelope with a very cute wax seal sticker containing the starting location in Haarlem, a cute brooch, linen bag and pen.

The bag and envelope went with me to Haarlem. The starting location was the Grote Markt and here we opened the envelope. Inside the envelope was directions and a booklet with information about the buildings and places you walk by. And go! We ended up walking for a couple of hours with stops here and there, passing by fun places and learning a lot about the (lurid) history of Haarlem and the Netherlands. We ended our tour back at the Grote Markt where we sat on a terrace for a while.

All in all, it was an interesting walk and we discovered some special places!
