For years we have been fans of Aardman’s animations. Not everyone is familiar with Aardman, but they are familiar with “Shaun the Sheep” or “Wallace and Grommit. When we heard that there would be an exhibition featuring this artist’s work, we didn’t hesitate for a moment! We had to go to The Art of Aardman!

Aardman at the Forum in Groningen

Art of Aardman expositie

Aardman has been making stop-motion films from clay dolls since 1980. Sounds like a big job already, but as detailed as they work at Aardman is unique. Given the large fan base, they now have an exhibit that travels all over the world. After Melbourne, Seoul and Paris, it will be on display until May 2021 at the Forum in Groningen. That’s 2 unique places together.

About the Forum

The art of Aardman Expositie

The Forum in Groningen is a remarkable building about which opinions are divided. But in terms of design and layout, this is one like very few of them. This is why they have won several awards, including best building in the Netherlands. The warren of escalators are already special, but the various library seating areas found throughout the building also give it a special look. You can get up to the roof and from there you have a great view of Groningen (if it is not foggy, as was the case with us…).

Beautiful exhibition

The exhibition is beautiful. Of all the animations made, the real sets are on display. Only then can you see how detailed the sets are. But you can also see the rocket from Wallace and Grommit, or the flying chicken from Chicken Run. An extra dimension is that you can also make your own stop-motion movies. There are several sets made, where you can make a movie with your own phone. The imagination is given completely free rein. There is a good response to the current Corona measures. There is disinfectant and cleaning supplies everywhere.

Play a role yourself!

The best ending is a large set where you can play a role yourself in a stop-motion movie. With, of course, the farmer’s signature glasses and his green hooded boots. Highly recommended, even if you are not really familiar with Aardman. You will be amazed at the artistic work they create and deliver. You can still visit The Art of Aardman exhibition through May 9, 2020.
