Shop your own closet for the perfect outfit

I have told you before about my ever returning wardrobe challenges. I never have time to shop and I don’t know how to combine the clothes I have in my closet. That is why I had a personal shopper visit me a year and a half ago who went through my closet with me to find the best combinations.

Unfortunately, we cannot hire a personal shopper now, but we all have plenty of time to empty your own closet and take a good look at what you actually have. You can go crazy mixing and matching sets to see what looks good together. So here is my blog again about cleaning out my closet. Maybe it will give you some inspiration to go shopping in your own wardrobe as well!

Lonely pieces of clothing you can no longer use

My biggest problem: I have several outfits hanging in my closet of which some are missing. A washed-out sweater, worn-out pants, old shoes. And then again, these are lonely garments that I don’t really know what to do with.

During one of my visits to Modemall Voorwinden, I met personal shopper Karin. She her own styling company and one of the services she offers is a wardrobe check. Being exactly the thing I am in such need of!

I scheduled an appointment with Karin for a wardrobe check and soon she was at my door one Saturday morning with her clothes rack. With a tray full of coffee, water and cookies, the two of us dove into the bedroom.

First, I did a quick screening of garments that really couldn’t be done anymore. Old crap that I was too lazy to throw away, but also never wear again. Then Karin walked through the remaining garments and step by step laid out different combinations on the floor to show how I could combine them with each other. And then I found out that with a single sweater I can create three different looks by combining them with different types of pants, or dress them down with a jacket.

We took photos of each combination so that I can always look back at the possible combinations that are out there. The combinations we made are really too many to remember.

A nice summer outfit, Ibiza style look for the terrace, or trendy business look to look good in the office. And we finished it all off with the right shoes, belt or scarf.

By the end of the morning, I had the right outfit for every occasion, in different colors and combinations. I also noticed that my wardrobe is already pretty complete except for a few pants and jacket. So now, for the next time I go shopping, I know exactly what I need and how to combine it with all the beautiful things in my closet.

The most important tips

So while you have time, empty your entire closet and make piles of clothes that really have to go and clothes you want to keep. Then spread out pants, skirts and dresses on the floor. Then walk over all the pieces with your blouses, sweaters and cardigans to see where everything looks nice. Do you have fun combinations lying around? Take pictures of those and keep looking for other combinations. Repeat this and at the end of the day you will have a pile of nice combinations stored in your phone. I still check those photos from time to time when I don’t know what to wear quickly.
