Visiting the Deventer cookie store

A visit to Deventer should not include a visit to the Deventer Biscuit Shop, of course. Cookie manufacturer J.B. Bussink has been making Deventer cookies since 1593. They still do this in the traditional way. For example, no eggs, milk and fats are used in the cake which keeps it fresh for a long time. We went to taste!
Deventer cookie store
On behalf of VVV Deventer we were allowed to visit this beautiful Hanseatic city. They had prepared a whole program for us to see and taste as much of Deventer as possible! Our first stop was immediately a very tasty one: we were allowed to go to the Brink 84, where the Deventer Koekwinkel is located. Here the coffee was waiting for us with real Deventer Cake.
Jacob Bussink
Koekbakker Schutte was enrolled as a master baker in the bakers’ guild in 1593. There were 13 bakers at that time. The firm of Schutte was taken over by Jacob Bussink in the 19th century. At that time, the cake bakery and the cake store could be found at the same address. In 1809, even Napoleon came to sample the cake! The original 19th century store unfortunately burned down. That was the danger of having a bakery at that time.
In 1952, the cookie factory was built in the Deventer business park. In 1958, the new Deventer Biscuit Shop opened. The interior still dates back to that time! And the gate outside with the worn sidewalk tile are still from the time of the first cookie store cum bakery. A fun detail to check out when you’re there!
Cozy coffee corner
Because the furniture and store interior date from 1958, everything has a wonderfully nostalgic feel. Even the furniture in the coffee corner is original. They have only been sanded and varnished a bit, according to the store owner. Walk upstairs, too! The merchant’s house has really narrow stairs and is beautiful to see. In fact, upstairs are more sitting areas and a small store.
Cookie tasting
Deventer Koek is actually a kind of gingerbread, but firmer and full of flavor. The original Deventer cake has been made since the Middle Ages. We got to taste this original cake and two other slices. The Original Kruidkoek is made with spices and orange chips. Delicious with a cup of coffee or tea and really a taste that doesn’t bore. Next came the Apple Cinnamon cake. This one was our favorite. The candy sugar on the cake gave it a delicious bite.
We took two of them right away, haha. Third, we got to taste Gingerbread. Also delicious, but a tad too overpowering for me. But maybe that’s because I’m not really a fan of ginger. My friend, however, found this one to be delicious. There were also two Bee cookies with the coffee. A Bijtje is a small piece of Deventer spiced cake (the original flavor) in a handy take-away package. Ideal for the lunchbox!
Nice shopping
Deventer Koekwinkel is the perfect place to buy a nice memento of Deventer. As a gift for yourself or for someone else! Besides Deventer cake, they also sell tableware, beers and liquors that go great with the cake and other nostalgic treats. If you want, they wrap it beautifully! They also have a webshop!
Thanks for the delicious cake and thanks for organizing VVV Deventer!
