Weekend break in Zeeland Flanders

I was earlier a weekend at Wit Huisje in Turkeye. That’s in Zeeland Flanders. Now that was my first time there, but man what fun it is there! And versatile! Here are the best highlights of Zeeland Flanders for a wonderful weekend getaway.
Ostrich farm Monnikenwerve in Sluis
We took our eight-year-old son to Zeeland Flanders and he loves animals. On the internet we found a real ostrich farm. In 2005 we visited an ostrich farm in South Africa and that was very impressive. But this ostrich farm really has the Dutch sobriety and charm that we love. And they had two-week-old ostrich babies! Tours are given every Saturday and Sunday. The tour was given by the farmer himself who did a very nice job. We immediately noticed that they were very good to the animals there and do the job with a lot of love. The birds themselves were great too! You just have to look into the huge eyes with those big eyelashes and you are in love. They are also very curious about especially blond people, we were told. The tour was super fun, educational and definitely recommended!
A day out in Bruges
From Zeeland Flanders, it’s a chicken’s breath away (to stay in the avian mood) to Belgium. We drove on from the ostrich farm to the beautiful city of Bruges. It was a beautiful day so it was teeming with tourists. The square with the stepped gables was very busy. We spontaneously felt like chocolate because you can buy it almost everywhere. Sonlief was particularly impressed by the Fries Museum, but in the end we didn’t go in. We did visit a church. The St. Salvator’s Cathedral is beautiful to see. Inside they were renovating, but that didn’t take away from the fact that it was very impressive. Especially the stained glass windows were beautiful! Furthermore, a delicious lunch with Belgian fries then slowly back to Wit Huisje.
Eating out in Breskens
The place Breskens is really cozy. Breskens is the seaside resort of Zeeland Flanders, but around the square is also a good place to be. We had a delicious pizza at La Casa. Besides pizza, they also have different grill dishes. When we arrived, the whole outdoor terrace was full, but fortunately two people were just checking out, so we had a table! And great under the patio heater, too. The service was super friendly and despite the crowds, they were even able to crack a joke now and then. We were also served very quickly. After dinner we were given a delicious amaretto and walked towards the beach.
Shopping in Terneuzen
Terneuzen is the city of the Flying Dutchman and you can shop very well there! There is a large shopping center with the well-known stores, but also smaller boutiques. Nice clothing stores include Stretch Fashion, Jola Mode, Marlijn Mode and Studio Blique. For fun baby and children’s fashion and gear, go to Babyhuis Casita and gentlemen can indulge themselves at Dock-M. Looking for a nice gift? Then Dikoi comes highly recommended! For brocante gift items you can go to‘T Kanten Brocantje. At Troepje you will find a colorful collection of statues, flags and incense. Bomont sells trendy women’s, men’s and children’s clothing and home accessories.
Shopping makes you hungry. Fortunately, they know how to deal with that in Terneuzen. Lunch is served at De Konditorei, where you can enjoy an extensive high tea. For a nice ice cream you go to Gelato Vincenza where you can eat homemade ice cream as well as cakes and appelbollen. For a bigger appetite, you can go to Marmara in Terneuzen for the tastiest spareribs and Sydney Greet & Eat for contemporary and hip food. You can top it all off at Wine Bar Culineuze.
Delicious food on the coast
Our weekend in Zeeland Flanders unfortunately flew by. But we did not leave before making a lunch stop on the beach of Breskens. Iske from Wit Huisje recommended Loods Tien to us as a beach restaurant. So after checking out we drove back to the coast of Zeeland. It was packed but there was still a nice spot out of the wind for us. Sonny was having fun on the beach and we ordered some drinks. The menu was extensive and because we could not choose, we opted for the Happas. This is a selection of lunch dishes. For Jesse we chose poffertjes. We had a great time on the beach of Breskens and we will definitely return to Zeeland Flanders!
