What to do in Utrecht – 10 great tips

Want to explore a fun city? Then Utrecht is the place for a fun day out full of culture, nature, coffee and hidden spots. The city feels compact and uncluttered, but has an awful lot to offer – from flower markets to fairytale gardens.
I myself visit Utrecht regularly for a day of shopping or a visit to one of the theaters and museums. The terraces are also great, especially in the summer. But I love strolling through the shopping streets the most. Especially the narrow side streets and hidden gardens that can be found just at the edge of the center. In this blog I take you along 10 places that are definitely worth a visit.
Downtown Oudegracht
The Oudegracht is the beating heart of Utrecht – with its historic wharves, bridges, boats and cozy terraces. Start your day with a delicious coffee at ‘t Koffieboontje, go for a Mediterranean lunch at Happ’s or have a delicious Italian dinner at Cantina di David. And at any time of day, you can sit down on one of the cozy terraces anywhere along Oudegracht. You’ll look out over the water and enjoy all the life around you.
Cruising the canals
As soon as the sun shines, you’ll want to experience Utrecht from the water. Rent a sloop at sloephurenutrecht.nl or choose a SUP-board or canoe at dagjesuppen.nl and sail through the canals at your own pace. You’ll see the city from a totally different angle – under bridges, past historic facades and hidden gardens. Don’t feel like sailing yourself? Then book a canal cruise with Schuttevaer.
Flower market at the Janskerkhof
Every Saturday, Janskerkhof turns into a colorful sea of flowers. From tulips to field bouquets and from herb plants to hanging geraniums – this market breathes spring. The scents, colors and friendly vendors make it a treat to stroll here. Extra fun: combine it with a tour of the adjacent streets full of antique shops.
Climb (or admire) the Dom Tower
The Dom Tower is the icon of the city – and with its 112 meters it is also the highest church tower in the Netherlands. For the adventurous types: you can climb it (with a guide!) for a spectacular view. Don’t feel like climbing stairs? No problem! The tower is also beautiful from below – especially from the Domkerk or Domplein.
Flora’s Hof – a secret courtyard garden
On the side of the Cathedral is Flora’s Hof, a small courtyard garden that you would easily walk past. But what a gem! Here flower beds bloom, you can see remnants of Roman walls and you have a wonderful view of the Dom Tower. Sit on the bench, get a coffee to go, and enjoy this quiet spot in the busy city center.
The Old Hortus – an oasis of tranquility
Right in the center, but totally hidden: The Old Hortus is a former botanical garden with century-old trees, ornate greenhouses and benches among the flowers. Here you only hear birds singing. Stroll along the ponds, discover exotic plants or take a break on the terrace of the museum café.
Wander through the Agnietenstraat
Not the most famous street, but definitely one of the most charming: the Agnietenstraat. This narrow street is hidden behind the Centraal Museum and feels almost village-like. Think 12 rooms, by Maria van Pallaes, with flowers on the facades, small windows and a silence you rarely experience in a city.
Nostalgia in the Miffy Museum
Utrecht is the birthplace of Dick Bruna, the spiritual father of Miffy – and it shows! The Miffy Museum is a colorful paradise for young and old. Everything here is at children’s eye level, but it is also a feast of recognition for adults. Perfect for an hour of merriment – or just to reawaken your inner child.
Be surprised at Museum Speelklok
Musical instruments that play by themselves? That may sound dull, but Museum Speelklok really is a surprising experience. Think dancing puppets, cheerful sounds, barrel organs and music boxes. The interactive tour is contagious and unique – even if you are not a museum type!
Shopping in Hoog Catharijne
Time for a shopping session? Covered shopping center Hoog Catharijne is located right next to the station and is more than just a shopping center – it is spacious, light and filled with a mix of large chains and nice boutiques. Handy if you need something, or if it suddenly starts to rain.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is just walk around. Utrecht is cozy, convenient and has something new on every street corner. Hop on an OV bike or stroll at your leisure through the streets between the canals and discover your own favorite spots.
