Imagine: the sun is shining, you’re leisurely pedaling through rolling landscapes, stopping along the way for a local delicacy, and ending the day on a cozy terrace in a picturesque village. A cycling vacation is the way to discover new places at your leisure – whether in the Netherlands or just across the border. But how do you make sure that you set off in comfort and are not bothered by anything along the way? With these tips you will be ready for your next cycling adventure!

The right clothing: layers are key

Whether you’re whizzing along the Veluwe or venturing into the hills of southern Limburg, being properly dressed makes all the difference. Start with a breathable base layer, such as a merino wool shirt. This regulates your temperature and prevents unpleasant odors. Over that, wear a technical cycling shirt from, for example, AGU – ideal with those handy back pockets for snacks and sunscreen. And yes, even in summer: always bring a windproof jacket that fits in your handlebar bag, plus a light rain jacket for unexpected showers.

Alternate between short and long cycling shorts with chamois, to avoid chafing and to wash in between. Don’t forget warm arm and leg warmers for chilly mornings or descents in the mountains. A buff in your helmet against drafts or sun, and thin gloves for an early start complete your outfit.

Travel light = travel smart

Cycling vacation is not the time to lug around a suitcase full of outfits. But of course you do want to look nice on that cozy terrace in Maastricht or during a lunch stop in Alsace. Fortunately, good women’s cycling clothes don’t have to be boring at all. Opt for two basic colors that you can mix and match – that way you have plenty of options with just a few pieces.

Use compression pockets to keep your clothes compact and think multifunctional: your sports shirt is for cycling during the day, wear it with black leggings and sandals at night. Zipper pockets in your cycling shirt are handy for your card or keys, and a scented soap in a sealable pouch makes it easy to freshen up your clothes on the go. Also put a small clothes line with clips in your bag – that way your outfit hangs out to dry while you enjoy your well-deserved dinner.

Cycling abroad? Consider these extras

Are you setting off outside the Netherlands, for example along the Moselle or the Tuscan hills? Then here are a few smart additions. In hot countries, a sun hat or cap and a reusable cooling scarf are not a luxury. Instead, are you cycling through chilly mountain areas? Then an insulating gilet is nice to bring along.

Put your important papers (passport, insurance card, cash) in a waterproof waist bag worn under your shirt. Bring a small towel and slippers for bathroom stops, and don’t forget your power bank – handy for GPS, lights and smartphone. Extra brake pads for the mountains, chain spray against the sea air along the coast: it’s those little details that make your cycling vacation just that little bit more relaxing.

And oh yeah, test at home to make sure your luggage is secure. You don’t want to lose all your gear halfway down a cobblestone trail. Reflective strips on your bike or bag make you extra visible at dusk.

On your bike, you’ll discover more!

Whether you take a multi-day tour in your own country or go on an adventure abroad – with these tips you will be well prepared and you can really enjoy being outdoors. And who knows… maybe you’ll discover your new favorite bike ride or charming little town along the way. Have fun pedaling!
