A day trip? You really don’t always have to head for the Randstad or even abroad for a fun trip. In fact, more and more people are discovering the other regions of the Netherlands, such as the east of the country. In cities like Enschede there is plenty to do for everyone who loves culture, good food and fun shopping.

But: those who have never been to the Eastern Netherlands probably have no idea what fun activities there are to do. No worries, because I have listed all the fun family outings in the eastern part of the country for you in this blog.

Why a day out to the eastern Netherlands?

Now you may be asking yourself why a getaway to Enschede or Doetinchem is such a must. Actually, the answer to this question is very simple: the variety of busy cities in the west of the country makes the east so attractive. You can find lively cities here, but also tranquility and greenery. It is never extremely busy, but cozy, making it ideal for people who want to go out without mass tourism.

In addition, you will find plenty of surprising stores and fun activities for young and old in the eastern part of the Netherlands. You can easily combine several activities, such as shopping with a visit to a museum and eating out. Or take a walk into the greenery and have lunch outside the city. This is exactly what makes a day out so much fun for different ages.

A day out in Enschede: city conviviality with fun activities

If you are looking for a suitable city for a day out, Enschede is the place to be. Enschede is one of those cities that is often underestimated, which is a shame! There really is a lot to do: the center is very lively and you will find many fine stores and restaurants. Around the Oude Markt, for example, you are always good for a cup of coffee, a drink or a nice dinner.

Another thing that makes Enschede extra nice is the combination of city and creativity. Especially in recent years, many cultural hotspots have been added. This fits very well with the textile history of the city. For example, visit De Museumfabriek, take a stroll through the green Volkspark or go shopping at Van Heekplein or in one of the city’s many crooked streets. Don’t forget to take a snapshot on the city’s love seat, which is now nationally known. And are you coming with a group? There are plenty of fun group outings in Enschede for any type of party.

Visit Doetinchem: relaxed atmosphere in the Achterhoek region

Do you fancy a city that is a bit smaller, but still has plenty to do? Then Doetinchem in the Achterhoek is a very good idea. Doetinchem actually feels immediately different from Enschede, but that’s exactly what makes it so much fun to combine the two during an outing. Where Enschede feels really city-like, this place feels more like a village, but: in the good way! The center of Doetinchem is in fact conveniently arranged and cozy with very nice stores and cozy terraces.

In addition, from the center you are in the nature if you feel like it. You understand: there are plenty of activities to enjoy, both in town and outside. For example, rent an e-chopper to get to know the countryside or go for an adventurous Outdoor Escape with friends. Or how about an exciting Murder Game? Or a chocolate making workshop? In short: plenty to do and see in a city like Doetinchem.

To get from Enschede to Doetinchem (or vice versa) you drive through beautiful green landscapes, so you completely experience that feeling of being away for a while.

Are you only going out for one day and want to make the most of it? Then it is good to think about what is important to you. Do you mainly want to store? Then choose Enschede where you can find large chain stores and small boutiques. Instead, do you fancy a fun activity near nature combined with a nice dinner in a city? Then Doetinchem is again a very smart choice. Also look at your travel party and decide based on that which city is the most fun for your next day out.
