Fall break is almost upon us. For region North and Central from October 16 and for region South from October 23. The children have a week off and you have arranged to have time to do something fun. But what? We have listed the best activities for the autumn vacations!

Go outside!

Even though it can rain quite a bit and the temperature has already dropped considerably by now, it’s great to get outside. Take a brisk walk through the local park, go to the woods or take a lovely walk on the beach. The children soon amuse themselves with a stick, or by looking for treasures from nature. For example, collect leaves and chestnuts and make crafts with them at home. And how wonderful is it to end a long walk with a nice piece of apple pie and a big mug of hot chocolate?

Discover nature during the OERRR Wild Outdoor Days

Natuurmonumenten has a wonderful activity program that lets children get close to nature in a playful way, the OERRR Wild Outdoor Days. Guided by the forest ranger, the children go on an adventure and learn all the skills they need to become a real forest ranger themselves. Put on boots and old clothes because OERRR rangers aren’t afraid to get dirty!

Playing and romping around in the nature playground

In every town you can find a nice playground to enjoy playing. But nowadays there are also more and more beautiful nature playgrounds and barefoot paths to be found. How wonderful to introduce your child to nature in a playful way!

In Wassenaar, for example, you have Bosspeeltuin Het Monkeybos. Here children can literally and figuratively experience nature. They can build huts, climb trees, there is a cable car, a watchtower, very large water pipes they can walk through and much more.

At Stadspark Berg & Bos in Apeldoorn, children not only get in touch with the flora side of nature, but also with many forest animals that you will meet here. Follow the kids nature trail through the forest or let them climb and clamber around on the playground. And did you know that here you can also find the highest watchtower of the Veluwe? This watchtower is no less than 26 meters high and also stands on a hill of 9 meters.

Are you looking for a nature playground near Utrecht? Then pay a visit to Bosspeeltuin Maximapark. A nice place to let your kids have a good time after a walk in the beautiful Maximapark. They can climb, clamber and slide here.

In Lage Zwaluwe near the Biesbosch you will find a recreation area where you can really go in all directions. Nature playground the “Kleine Biesbosch” is a wonderful outdoor play area of no less than 26,000 m2! They have a rowing pond with boats, creeks, a huge willow tunnel, they can build wood rafts and much more.

Escape rooms for children

Are you looking for an indoor activity but don’t feel like visiting yet another indoor playground? Then book an escape room for kids. That way they have a fun activity and you also challenge them to get their brains cracking. In Escaperoom Time, children from 6 to 10 years go in search of the treasure of Davy Jones. They start in “captivity” and through a combination of Real Life puzzles and Virtual Reality must escape and search for the treasure on the uninhabited island. Slightly older children can have their fun here with the VR Escaperoom TIME game and the VR Shooter The Walking Dead.

Escaperoom voor kinderen

In Amsterdam, children ages 9 and up dive into Backspace Escaperooms ‘ time machine . In Schagen, children ages 8 and up find themselves in the world of Willy Wonka, and in Alkmaar, children ages 8 and up can be enchanted in the Wizard School.

Museum visit

You can also take the kids to the museum. Nowadays there are a lot of museums where children absolutely do not have to be bored.

In Rotterdam, you can visit Villa Zebra. A unique children’s museum with interactive exhibitions and installations, original art workshops and every two weeks a Klooi-or Voorleesmiddag. Toddlers and preschoolers can be safely let loose here and explore on their own and children between the ages of 7 and 12 are challenged with interesting workshops.

At Corpus in Oegstgeest, next to Leiden, you find yourself in a gigantic human body. Children as young as 6 years old learn here in a fun and interactive way how their own bodies are put together and how the body functions.

But also NEMO in Amsterdam, Space Expo in Noordwijk, the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam and the Railway Museum in Utrecht are very nice museums to visit with children. A lot of museums also organize special activities for children during the autumn vacations. You can find a more extensive overview of fun museums in our blog visiting museums with the whole family.

Nice things to do

Is your child interested in technology and science? Then visit GeoFort in Herwijnen (between Gorinchem and Zaltbommel) in the autumn vacations. Step into an elevator that drills right through the earth’s surface, get disoriented in the underground corridor, find your way like a salmon through the maze, create landscapes in the interactive sandbox and experience the Netherlands in a thousand billion Minecraft cubes. There is plenty to do for all ages.

Halloween activities

October is of course also dedicated to Halloween in many places. So too at several amusement parks around the country. How fun is it to not only get spooked while riding that thrilling roller coaster, but to get into the spooky mood throughout the park. For example, you can have a fun day of horror at Julianatoren in Apeldoorn, Drievliet in Rijswijk and Toverland in Sevenum.

Walibi also organizes Halloween, but here we recommend leaving the kids at home and going by yourself. After all, Halloween Fright Nights is ultimate horror. You may be scared to death, but you must have experienced it once! You will experience the Fright Nights from October 9 to 31.
