World War II heritage

Arnhem is inextricably linked to World War II because of the infamous Battle of Arnhem, an operation that was part of Operation Market Garden. The city is still home to numerous relics that recall this period. The famous Airborne Museum at Hartenstein, located in a former headquarters of the British airborne troops, tells the story of this event and commemorates the bravery of the soldiers who fought for freedom. Visitors can find original artifacts, photographs and personal stories that bring this period to life.

Another notable memorial is the John Frost Bridge, named after British Lieutenant Colonel John Dutton Frost, who defended the bridge during the battle. Now known as the Bridge to Remember, this bridge is an impressive place to visit. Not only because of its historical significance, but also because of the view of the Rhine River and the surrounding area.

When you walk from the bridge along the quay, you automatically end up at Foodhall Arnhem. If you love good food, this is highly recommended! This culinary hotspot offers a range of international dishes and local delicacies, all under one roof. Whether you’re in the mood for sushi, pizza, burgers, or tapas, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your taste buds here. It is the perfect place to enjoy a cozy meal with friends and family. We had a short stop here and enjoyed a delicious Pokebowl.

The cozy downtown and the 7 Streets

After lunch at Foodhall Arnhem, we explored Arnhem’s city center. The inner city exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The picturesque streets, with cobbled sidewalks and historic facades, invite you to wander around and enjoy the charm of the city. An absolute must-see is the 7 Streets, a collection of seven streets filled with boutiques, art galleries, and cozy cafes.

These streets are a paradise for lovers of shopping and culture. You can find unique garments and handmade jewelry here, as well as admire local artwork. The 7 Streets are the perfect place to browse and buy gifts or souvenirs.

Another park in the city center is Musispark. Here you will also find the Musis Sacrum. This is the cultural heart of Arnhem. A contemporary theater and concert hall where you can enjoy a variety of music, dance, theater and other cultural events. Performances range from classical music to contemporary theater productions.

Architectural splendor of the station

Of course, we also took a quick look at the Central Station. In fact, Arnhem’s Central Station is more than just a hub for train travelers; it is a feat of modern architecture. The new station, which opened in 2015, is known for its striking design with an undulating roof of glass and steel. The station is an impressive welcome to visitors and symbolizes the modern look of the city.
