Cycling and hiking in Friesland

Going to Friesland almost feels like being abroad. You really are away for a while, wonderful! That is why Friesland cannot be missing from our blog series Cycling and hiking in the Netherlands. Friesland has a lot to offer and because the landscape is so vast, you sometimes feel as if you are alone on earth.
Hiking in Friesland
Friesland has some wonderful hiking areas such as National Park the Drents-Friese Wold. We have previously highlighted this area in our blog on cycling and hiking in Drenthe, as the area runs through Drenthe and Friesland. Highly recommended is the 8.3 km Berkenheuvel, Drents-Friese Wold hiking trail. Another nice route for hiking is a walk through the polders around Oudebildtzijl. This route is just over 12 km. Slightly longer (16 km) is the Walking Route through the Royal Oranjewoud. On the route is from a watchtower. Do you prefer to stay in urban areas? Then do the city walk through Leeuwarden. This one is only 4 km and gives you a good impression of this cozy city.
Cycling in Friesland
If you have really good legs, then of course cycling the Elfstedentocht is a must. And you can! We have found a route you can do yourself, but it is 264.2 km long. It will take some time, but you can say you cycled the Eleven Cities Tour! Another fun route is the Frije Wiken route. This 32 km route passes water, meadows, forests and, to top it all off, the charming village of Gorredijk. The Oersetters Pontjesroute is a fun 51 km bicycle route because, among other things, it crosses two lakes. So you have to cross the ferry by bike. Are you a fishing enthusiast? Then the Fishermen’s Route is definitely a lot of fun to do. The route is 39 km long and passes all kinds of charming fishing villages where of course you can stop for a tasty fish.
