Discover Dordrecht with Walk the City’s walking app

We were recently in Dordrecht at the invitation of Walk the City to explore this city using the walking app. I made it a mother-daughter outing this time by going with my own mother. We chose the most beautiful day of the May vacation: after a rather drizzly time, the weather was finally lovely and sunny!
For me it was the first time I used a walking app.Walk the City has developed a walking app that offers more than 50 different city walks throughout the Netherlands, but also in Belgium, Germany and even France! Some walks are free and other walks can be downloaded for a small price of just €1.99.
Ready for the start
I had already downloaded the app on my phone and installed the Dordrecht walk with a simple press of a button. It immediately became visible in the menu on the app and I read that the starting point of the walking route was at Johan de Witstraat. We arrived there by car and quickly spotted a parking space close by. With sunglasses on and phone in hand, we got started.
Simple and clear hiking app
The app guides you through the walk using photos of landmarks with an extensive piece of text about the landmark and its background. The route you follow is also marked with clear instructions and photos so you can’t go wrong.
I am not from the neighborhood of Dordrecht and really only knew this place from driving by on the highway so I had no idea what there is to experience here. The walking app from Walk the City took us through the ring road and the city center of Dordrecht and we discovered how much beauty there is to see here. I was very surprised by the beautiful medieval buildings, cozy streets and hidden courtyards. And I never knew how many little harbors and canals run through Dordrecht and what a beautiful sight this gives the city!
Special places and a rich history
The explanations of the various sights led us through the city’s rich history about the origins of trade and the port area, the sieges and the beginning of the city’s independence. But the beautiful churches and museums are also examined in detail. What I liked most of all were the various courtyards hidden at the edge of the city center that we were able to wander through. And a big surprise was that when we were led through a city gate we suddenly looked out on a vast stretch of water: namely, the Drierivierenpunt where the Beneden-Merwede, the Noord and the Oude Maas rivers meet.
The walk is 4.1 kilometers and we took about 2 hours. This way we could read the background of each place and take a good look around and let it sink in. It was great to learn more about Dordrecht and discover such special places.
A delicious lunch to end the tour
And after the walk, we plopped down on Centre Ville’s terrace for a cool glass of icetea and a delicious sandwich.
