There are lots of exciting outings to experience in Limburg! I myself found a walk in the caves of the St. Pietersberg quite exciting, but it can be much more exciting! Are you the adventurous type and planning a vacation soon? Then South Limburg comes highly recommended! Please note that you should always book in advance. There is a maximum number of participants, so avoid disappointment.

Marl caves in South Limburg

There are several marl caves to visit in South Limburg. You can go to the Fluweelengrotte, Mergelrijk and the Gemeentegrot in Valkenburg, and of course to the Zonnegrot and the Grotten Noord near Maastricht. During my week in Limburg, I visited the Zonnegrot via Maastricht Underground. This cave is not lit and marl has been mined for over 700 years. So they are not natural caves. Inside the caves there is always a constant temperature of 12 degrees (summer and winter), so keep that in mind! When we entered the cave, the guide handed out three extra lanterns which fortunately gave us some light because you really can’t see your hand in front of your face. Such a cave walk is extremely interesting! But you can make it even bolder!

Cave biking

You can also go cave biking with ASP Adventure. Cave biking can be done in the Sibbergroeve (Daalhemerweg 150 Valkenburg) and is suitable for anyone in normal physical condition. Minimum age is 6 years. In the caves it is dark, so you only have your own bike light. Truly an exciting outing in South Limburg! Of course you only go cave biking with an experienced guide and because cave biking is quite different from normal cycling, they use special bikes. Fan of history? Then book the tour Cave Biking in Time.

Cave climbing tour in Valkenburg

Attention! This tour is not suitable for people with claustrophobia! The cave climbing tour under and around the Valkenburg Castle ruins is not for wimps. During this tour you will find yourself in the sneak routes of the castle that were necessary in case of danger. For example, there is a climbing wall and you can abseil underground. Truly a unique experience and you get to decide how far you go beyond your own limits.

Underground cemetery

Experience a piece of Rome in Valkenburg! For here you can visit Museum the Roman Catacombs. From about 1850 it was quite normal for rich people to study archaeology and other cultures. It was therefore very normal to have their own private collection. The Roman Catacombs are an example of this. The museum was founded by textile merchant Jan Diepen in collaboration with the famous architect Pierre Cuypers (of Amsterdam Central and the Rijksmuseum, among others). The museum even received the cooperation of the Vatican and Roman authorities! Open to the public since 1910, it is rightfully an exciting getaway in South Limburg.

Rappelling from the Wilhelmina Tower

The Wilhelminatoren in Valkenburg is 35 meters high and real daredevils can zip down from here! The Wilhelminatoren is part of Attractiepark Valkenburg and don’t be afraid: there are also things to do for less daring people. There is a cable car, a toboggan run, a tubing track, a bounce area and a laser game area. So fun for young and old alike!

Adventure Valley in Landgraaf

In Landgraaf, climbing and scrambling enthusiasts can indulge themselves at Adventure Valley. Here you will find one of the largest climbing parks in Europe! Besides climbing in the climbing park, you will find 6 ziplines, an adventure trail, and an alpine coaster. Another exciting outing in South Limburg!

Three countries point in Vaals

Totally unexciting but fun to do with the family is the Drielandenpunt in Vaals. You have to poke through the whole touristy thing for a while, but if you’re in South Limburg this is still a must-do. The watchtower, Skywalk Vaals, is still pretty exciting for anyone with a fear of heights. The tower is 34 meters high and overlooks Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The maze at the triple-border point is still quite a challenge! We didn’t manage to make it to the center point 8 years ago, but this year we finally did! Tip: use the passport, there are useful things in here ;-).
