Give some extra attention on National Senior Citizens Day

For years we have heard various reports in the media about the loneliness of the elderly. And especially now in Corona time. Out of care and safety, we no longer, or as little as possible, visit our vulnerable elders, which only increases the feeling of loneliness. And since it’s National Elder Day, we went looking for tips you can use to give your grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle or neighbor or anyone else a little boost.
A little attention goes a long way
Letting someone know you are thinking of them can make them feel good. So a quick call, card or sweet message can make someone happy. And what does this cost you in terms of time or effort? Nothing, right?
Out together
In this time of Coronavirus infection risk, you may prefer not to enter anything with them, but going for a walk around the block together can also be very nice. It is also important for the elderly to get some fresh air and a little exercise can do a lot of good. Do they have difficulty walking? Then take them, with a walker or in a wheelchair to the nearest bench to their house and take a seat there. That way you can have a nice chat in the fresh air outside and they will be home in no time. You will see that afterwards they feel that they have had a real outing that they will enjoy for a while.
Bring something along
Even though you’d rather not enter their home, you can stop by and drop something off at their door. A nice apple pie, something to read, a cozy plant, some food you prepared for them or a few groceries. That way they have seen your face for a while and you also make them happy with what you dropped off at their door.
Video calling
Video calling has become an integral part of our existence in recent months. For our elderly, it may still be a bit tricky, but with a little help from your side, it will really work. And don’t forget that the current generation of elderly people is already much more handy with modern technology. Especially if they own a smartphone or tablet, video calling via Facetime or WhatsApp is a breeze.
Don’t forget the other senior citizens, too
Don’t just think about your own family members when it comes to a bit of attention. How about the elderly neighbor down the street from you? Or the elderly lady who walks her dog every morning that you run into on your run. A kind word or a brief chat is easily made and makes especially older people feel like they are still in society. And if you have the opportunity, it’s always a good idea to offer your help with a chore or errand they can’t do themselves.
Happy National Parents’ Day!
