Leidens Ontzet - Visit Leiden

The Netherlands has a total of 11 official holidays. In addition to these national holidays, there are also several holidays throughout the country that apply only to a particular region. For example, carnival is celebrated especially “Under the Rivers” extensively. During Carnival, just about everything is down, schools are closed and many companies adjust to this as well. Leiden also has its own celebration: Leidens Ontzet. Leidens Ontzet is commemorated and celebrated on and around October 3. The schools in Leiden are closed and throughout the city various events and festivities are organized.

There is the Leiden Fair and the city smells of herring, fresh (white) bread and stew. Every year this commemorates the end of the Spanish siege on October 3, 1574.

A piece of history

Leiden had sided with the Prince of Orange during the Eighty Years’ War, causing the Spanish army to move into the city and besiege it. The first siege lasted from October 1573 to March 1574. After the Spaniards suddenly left, they returned two months later. The city was not prepared for this, causing a severe food shortage. On Oct. 3, the Spaniards left for good due to the arrival of the Sea Beggars and because rising waters threatened to flood the city.

After the Spanish troops gave up the siege, the townspeople were treated to herring and white bread by the Water Beggars. In the abandoned Spanish army camp, stew of parsnips, onions, carrots and meat were discovered.

Festivities

The most important part of the celebration of Leidens Ontzet is the Grand Parade. In addition, young and old can enjoy themselves at the Leidse Kermis; the Lunapark. The fair is open on both October 2 and 3.
