Prepare for winter sports with Roundhill

The winter sports vacation fell through for many people last season because of Corona. We hope that next year winter sports fans will be able to get back on their skis or snowboard in the snow. A good preparation is very important, especially if you have skipped a year of winter sports.
Roundhill, Indoor skiing and snowboarding in Dordrecht is happy to help you prepare for winter sports. But what are the advantages of taking ski lessons in the Netherlands? We asked Mark-Jan, ski instructor at Roundhill!
Ski lessons in the Netherlands, is it necessary?
“Taking ski lessons in the Netherlands in advance definitely has added value! First of all, it’s good for your technique. Coming down the mountain in a controlled manner at your own speed is already a challenge for many people. We always say, anyone can ski fast. But controlling your speed is really another level. Preparing the body for a week of skiing is also very important. We suddenly arrive in a different atmosphere and then expect our body to be able to make the effort we need right away. If you already have several hours in your legs in the Netherlands you will find that that step to the snow is a lot smaller,” says Mark-Jan. “And this year that may be more important than ever.”
Why is that more important this year?
“A lot of people have missed the meters they normally make. People will only notice this on the slopes themselves and then are too late to prepare properly. If you book some lessons in Holland this year you will be ahead of this and have more fun from your vacation.”
What should you think about when taking ski lessons in NL?
“Try to set a goal for yourself what you want to achieve and ventilate this to your ski school. To give just one example, improving your technique or overcoming a fear are related, but are also two different things and require a different approach. If you have a good feeling about your chosen ski school and your teacher from the start, your lessons will be much more rewarding,” says Mark-Jan.
What is the difference between having a job like you have and taking lessons in the powder?
“At our roller rink the teacher is next to you, in front of you, or behind you. In short, always close by. We can quickly and pointedly point out any mistakes. Another big advantage is the mirror you have in front of you. You can check yourself directly in it. The smooth slope makes you feel the best under your skis. This makes you very aware of your ski movement and what exactly is happening when you do something.”
Does it matter if you are a beginner or advanced skier at your course?
“No absolutely not! Everyone can come to us with their goals! Even if you have never been on winter sports before”.
What is your added value when skiing on the roller rink? (As with someone who is anxious)
“Funny that you guys mention anxiety, this is a common topic with us at the rink. Actually, the answer to that is very simple; good technique. When you have mastered proper technique, you are in control and in control of your skiing, your turns and your speed. Only in this way do you have confidence in your own ability and can you give the fear a place,” says Mark-Jan.
What is the ideal ski equipment?
“So many people so many wishes. Ideal ski equipment is different for everyone. What I personally find very important are good boots. This is really a big part of your enjoyment. Shoes are the connection between the foot and the ski. Therefore, this is an essential part of your equipment. If your shoes fit your foot, skiing will be a lot easier and above all more fun! When it comes to clothing, layers are my favorite. Thin layers on top of each other keep you warm but also allow you to take something off quickly if it’s too hot.”
Is it wise to buy your own ski gear or is it better to rent?
“Again, this is very personal and both have their pros and cons. Also, be sure to remember that the course where you take lessons probably rents as well. These people know your technique like no other and can therefore give you a ski for your level that will really benefit you.”
What do you definitely need when you come to train at your roller rink?
“A trial class. Come experience what the roller rink can do for you. Whether it is the fear of an ice slab, “warm skiing” for winter sports or any other goal. Come experience it. Only then can you tell if it’s what for you or not!”
What is the worst thing that can go wrong?
“You can get addicted, by advance excuse,” laughs Mark-Jan.
Roundhill is closed for a while now but will reopen in early September! They can’t wait to meet you on the course and help you learn your technique or improve your technique. Do you have winter sports plans? Then it’s definitely not an unnecessary luxury to take a few lessons in the Netherlands. And Roundhill really is the perfect place for that!
