Rotterdam – Shopping in Rotterdam
Last updated: June 16, 2026.
Rotterdam is a wonderful city for a day of shopping. It’s large, diverse, and always bustling. Here you’ll find well-known retail chains, unique boutiques, indoor shopping malls, and creative hotspots. Whether you’re looking for something specific or just want to browse, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in Rotterdam. We’ll take you on a tour of the city’s best shopping areas.
The famous shopping streets
The Lijnbaan
The Lijnbaan is Rotterdam’s most famous shopping street—and for good reason! It was once the very first shopping promenade in the Netherlands, and the street still has a special charm. Being car-free and offering a wide variety of shops ensures a relaxed shopping experience. You’ll find well-known brands like H&M, Mango, Bershka, Pull & Bear, Manfield, and JD Sports. If you walk all the way down the Lijnbaan, you’ll naturally reach Binnenwegplein, home to stores like Zara and the MediaMarkt Tech Village. On Friday evenings, stores stay open until 9:00 p.m.
The Koopgoot (Beurstraverse)
The Koopgoot—officially known as the Beurstraverse—is a unique underground shopping street that runs directly beneath the Coolsingel. With over 40 stores, you’ll find everything here: from fashion and personal care to gift shops. The H&M here is the largest in the Netherlands! And at the end of the Koopgoot, you’ll emerge at the iconic department store De Bijenkorf—worth a visit in its own right. Be sure to also check out the adjacent Hema for no-nonsense quality at a fair price. De Bijenkorf is open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and even until 9:00 p.m. on Fridays.
The Markthal
The Markthal isn’t just any market—it’s an icon. This impressive horseshoe-shaped building, also known as the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam, attracts millions of visitors every year. And for good reason: the ceiling is a work of art in itself! Inside, you’ll find dozens of stalls offering fresh produce, delicacies, cheese, fish, and exotic ingredients from all over the world, plus a variety of restaurants and street food stands. Don’t forget the charming little shops, either—from home decor to specialty gift shops. Visit on a weekday morning when it’s least crowded.
Trendy streets for boutiques & unique shops
Want to really get a feel for Rotterdam’s shopping scene? Then you’ll need to venture off the main shopping streets and into the more intimate and creative side streets.
De Meent
De Meent is the street for anyone looking for something a bit more exclusive. Here you’ll find trendy boutiques, designer shops, and lifestyle concept stores alongside well-known brands like COS, Zara Home, HAY, and Carhartt. In between, it’s also a great spot to grab a drink or have lunch at one of the street’s many dining hotspots. De Meent has a polished, urban vibe that’s a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the Lijnbaan. Be sure to take a quick detour down the side street De Oppert for some charming little boutiques.
Witte de Withstraat & the MAHO Quarter
Witte de Withstraat is Rotterdam’s most bohemian street: a mix of art, culture, vintage fashion, and creative boutiques. It’s also the go-to spot for vintage shoppers—with stores like Episode (top picks for Levi’s and classic basics), Sweet Rebels (vintage designer), Sluijter & Meijer, and Dearhunter. The atmosphere is creative and innovative. Combine your day of shopping on this street with a cozy drink. The bars and restaurants here are just as fun as the shops.
Nieuwe Binnenweg & Oude Binnenweg
Nieuwe Binnenweg is the longest shopping street in the Netherlands and also one of the most diverse! You’ll find a multicultural mix of shops, restaurants, and small boutiques. The Oude Binnenweg flows seamlessly into it and has a somewhat quieter, more nostalgic character. Perfect for those who want to shop in peace, away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. Here you’ll also find unique shops you won’t find anywhere else.
Oude Noorden
In the Oude Noorden, around the Zwaanshals, you’ll discover a different side of Rotterdam. Here you’ll find many small businesses, vintage shops, and creative concepts. Everything feels just a little more personal and unique. It’s a lovely neighborhood to stroll through at a leisurely pace and take your time exploring.
Indoor Shopping
Zuidplein
You can also enjoy great shopping on the south side of Rotterdam. The Zuidplein Shopping Center, for example, is a large, indoor mall where you’ll find everything under one roof—perfect for days when the weather isn’t so great. Combine shopping with modern architecture at the Kop van Zuid and a stunning view of the Maas River.
Alexandrium Shopping Center
No shopping center in the Netherlands is as large as Alexandrium in Rotterdam. You can find absolutely everything in the Shopping Center, the Megastores, and the Woonmall—from fashion and electronics to furniture and home accessories. This is the perfect destination if you want a full day of shopping without having to venture into the city. It’s easy to reach by metro, and there’s plenty of parking. Go on a weekday to avoid the crowds. On weekends and during school breaks, it can get very busy at the entrance.
Whether you spend the day browsing the main shopping streets or hunting for hidden boutiques, shopping in Rotterdam is always a treat. The city has character, energy, and a shopping scene that reveals something new to every visitor. Feel free to combine it with lunch or dinner afterward, because Rotterdam has more than enough to offer in terms of cuisine as well!
