Want to surprise someone in a special way? We have tips for you! Handy with the holidays coming up, but also for other occasions like a special birthday or a friends anniversary.

Personalized, homemade gifts

A personal, homemade gift is great to get, but also to give! Often it costs nothing, or not much, except time. Personalized gifts often take a long time to make. But you can surprise someone in a special way!

Make a personal time capsule

Collect special memories, such as photos, letters, small objects or favorite quotes, and put them in a box or pretty box. Add a letter writing why that person is special to you. You can agree to open the box together after a certain amount of time (for example, after a year or on another special occasion). Definitely time-consuming but incredibly fun to give AND to get! You can also do this for your children, for example. Make a box or box with the birth card, the first cuddly toy or favorite comforter, photos, teeth, bills with memories you name it! You then give it, for example, on an 18th birthday or other special occasion.

Organize a scavenger hunt

Have you known your someone for a very long time and also have quite a history together? Then organize a scavenger hunt that takes you to all the places that have been important to you. Think of your (elementary) school, favorite store, favorite restaurant, secret meeting place as a child, favorite playground of the past, and other places that have been important to the recipient. You can leave a message or a small gift at the places, but you can also turn it into a kind of WhatsApp scavenger hunt with a slightly bigger prize at the end. A dinner, for example, or a personalized gift. With this you really surprise someone in a special way!

Create a photo book full of special photos

Say you’ve known your friend since high school and you also spent vacations together, girlfriend outings and so on. Bet there are photos of those? Dive into your own archives and secretly approach her parents. They probably also have photo books full of them that you can probably browse through. The best part, of course, is if you can keep the photos or, even better, that there are negatives. But if you have a good printer, you can also have the photos scanned in and printed. Add texts and little personal mementos like concert tickets. Super fun to flip through together!

Give an Explosion Photo Box

Also totally and totally hip is the so-called Explosion Photo Box. This ready-made box contains compartments where you can put photos. In the middle is a larger box in which you can put another gift. When someone opens the box, the box falls apart, as it were, making all the photos suddenly visible. Hence the word “explosion.” Bet it’s a big surprise for the recipient These Explosion Photo Boxes are available at Temu, Bol and Action, among others, sometimes has them as well.

Still prefer a regular gift?

Surprise someone through the mailbox

Pamper someone with some goodies? Then the brownies, blondies and other treats from Nilsson’s Post are highly recommended. The brownies are delivered in the mailbox so the recipient does not have to stay at home. That’s quite a surprise when someone comes home from work! They even include a personal, handwritten card to make the surprise complete. They are available for every occasion, including St. Nicholas and Christmas. In addition to regular brownies, there are also gluten-free and vegan varieties, which taste delicious. We got to try them out and they were very much to our liking. You can read all about it in this blog.

You can also gift an exciting city walk through the mailbox. With The Little Walk of Horrors, the recipient discovers the dark side of the city. Consider Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, Delft, Nijmegen and The Hague. Without a guide, at your own pace and completely offline! Prefer to give a smaller gift? Then give a gift certificate from The Little Walk of Horrors as a gift! They have gift certificates of € 10, € 20 and € 30.

Surprise someone with a nice outing

Take someone on a fun outing such as a food tour of a city that is important to you. Take Rotterdam for example. There you can combine a food tour with a bike tour with Bike & Bite. Or do one in Amsterdam from Amsterdam Food Tours. Or join a Food & Wine Walk! Or discover a city together while walking with the walking app from Walk the City. Does someone live further away?
