Tips for a tasty cheese fondue

On Monday, April 11, it’s cheese fondue day! This delicious dish from France (so not Switzerland as everyone thinks) is very tasty and simple. You can of course go to your local cheesemonger for the best cheese tips and therefore cheese fondue tips. We are happy to supplement it for you with tasty dip tips!
The cheese fondue
The cheese fondue was born in France because the cheese there in winter was often hard and no longer edible. Diluting the hard cheese with warm milk created a tasty sauce. Around 1930, the Swiss adopted this French national dish and came up with a variation on it. They started making cheese fondue with white wine and came up with tasty things to dip in the cheese sauce. In the Netherlands we often use Gouda cheese while the Swiss use Gruyère and Emmentaler, depending on which part of Switzerland you order the cheese fondue in. This cheese is melted with white, dry wine (or broth if you prefer no alcohol) and flavored with herbs and garlic. The most commonly used spice is nutmeg, but you can vary that yourself.
Cheese variations
You can add a special twist to your cheese fondue by adding other cheeses to the basic ones. For example, Swiss Appenzeller cheese. This has certain herbs added to it that you taste again in the fondue. Want to add some spice to your cheese fondue? Then add a little (!) Roquefort. This blue-veined cheese is naturally salty and therefore adds a spicy twist to the fondue. But don’t use too much or it will be too salty!
Tasty dip tips
Of course (raw) vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, peppers, celery and cauliflower are well-known dip-tips. But also try dipping a piece of apple or pineapple in the cheese fondue. That’s a really surprising and refreshing combination! But (French) bread, crackers and breadsticks are also delicious. And how about nacho chips! Other tasty dip tips are:
- pearl onions
- radishes
- mushrooms
- chicory leaves
- meatballs
- knakworstjes
- baked bacon
- chorizo
- ham
- smoked chicken
Enjoy your meal!
PS: keep in mind that the alcohol in the cheese fondue does NOT evaporate! So if you have a cheese fondue with small children or pregnant women, it is wise to use broth, for example.
