Anyone with a non-essential store is having a tough time. The stores have been closed for quite some time and will remain so for some time. In the Netherlands your local bookstore is seen as non-essential (in Belgium it is, by the way!) and so it can use a helping hand. Because reading is a nice and relaxing activity, so the demand for books will be there! Shop as much as possible at your local bookstore. They are allowed to pick up their orders starting February 10!

The best books for children and teenagers

Lokale boekhandel

Reading is very important for children, especially after they have been homeschooled for an extended period of time. The reading skills of (especially younger) children may have deteriorated. But young people also read far too little, even though there are very fun and exciting books for them too! We have therefore found a few fun, local bookstores especially for children and adolescents.

Silvester Book and Game

In Zoetermeer there is a super cute local bookstore especially for children and youngsters. At Silvester Boek en Spel they sell great books as well as fun games. Definitely a reason to check out the website or give them a call. Because they are ready to advise you. When you are looking for a special gift for example.

In the Clouds

Bookstore In de Wolken in Voorburg can’t wait to open its doors to the young public again. They have a large assortment of books for children up to 14 years old and fun challenging mind games from Smartgames and others. Fun activities such as reading aloud are not possible right now, but as soon as they can again, everyone is welcome!

Alice in Wonderland

Lokale boekhandel

What a good name for a children’s bookstore! After all, that’s how I used to feel as a child in the library or bookstore. Alice in Wonderland is The Hague’s premier children’s bookstore and if you live in the area they would be happy to bring your order by!

The Magic Lantern

In Friesland you will find a nice children’s bookstore called De Toverlantaarn. The website already looks nice, let alone when you can go back to the store itself! Until then, you’ll have to make do with the webshop, but that’s a great way to support them!

Other nice children’s book stores

In Amsterdam you can find local bookstore De Kinderboekwinkel. They can, if you want, include a handwritten card with your order. Kiekeboek in Haarlem is also very nice and is, also in corona time, ready for you with advice. Children’s bookstore De Geheime Tuin in Rotterdam is also there for you! In Utrecht you can visit Kinderboekwinkel Kakelbont and in the east of the country you can visit the Arnhem Children’s Bookstore and Meester Mokka in Doetinchem.

Local Bookstores for adults

We have long known that reading has a relaxing effect. Of course you can order your books through websites like Bol.com, but what a shame it would be if your local bookstore had to close its doors. So order your books locally!

About the Water and Scheltema

Lokale boekhandel

In Amsterdam you will find bookstore Over het Water. They don’t work with a fixed catalog but rather like to surprise their customers with special titles. So take a quick look! And bookstore Scheltema in Amsterdam is also highly recommended.

Paagman

Paagman has a branch in The Hague (on the cozy Frederik Hendriklaan) and in Delft. They have always had the possibility to order online but now it is even more important! So take a quick look at their website and order your favorites. We have also written a number of blogs about books and by clicking on the various links you will automatically end up at this local bookstore.

Donner and Libris

Another fine bookstore is Donner bookstore with a branch in Rotterdam, among other places. Bookstore Libris is another fine store that you will find in Amstelveen and The Hague, among other places.

English bookshops

Lokale boekhandel

Do you love English-language books? Then The American Book Center in The Hague, Amsterdam and Amstelveen and Waterstones in Amsterdam are really great to browse around. Also on their websites by the way now that everything has to go online for a while. They ship all over the country so you don’t necessarily have to live nearby.

We wrote this blog on our own accord. Only with Paagman do we have an affiliation agreement.
