Back in time with these museums of antiquities

There are many museums in the Netherlands. Museums with art, museums about a particular city and museums with a particular theme. In this blog we dwell on museums that tell something about the past. How did people used to live? What did they live on and so on.
The Archeon in Alphen aan den Rijn
The Archeon has been a household name in the Netherlands for years when it comes to museums about times long gone. Chances are you have been there yourself with school in the past. The Archeon tells in a fun and playful way about Prehistory, the Roman Period and the Early Middle Ages. Each season there is also a certain theme to which fun activities are linked. Super fun for young and old alike!
The Dolmen Museum in Borger
In Borger, Drenthe and the surrounding area, you will find much evidence of life in ancient times. In various parts of Drenthe you can find dolmens, so many in fact that there is a real Hunebed Highway! The Hunebed Museum in Borger tells the story of the people who lived in this part of our country in prehistoric times. You’ll also find the largest hunebed in the Netherlands here. Blogger Sonja recently visited this museum of antiquities herself with her family here. Read her blog here.
PreHistoric Village in Eindhoven
The PreHistoric Village is an open-air museum in Eindhoven. It is therefore not open all year. This museum goes much further than just Prehistory: the times of the Vikings and the Middle Ages also pass by in this theme park. Just like the Archeon, there are real people walking around in this museum making your day out just that little bit more special!
The Roman catacombs in Valkenburg
South Limburg is known for its caves: you can find the caves of the St. Pietersberg near Maastricht and the Gemeentegrot in Valkenburg. But in Valkenburg, you can also visit the Roman Catacombs. Descend into the magnificent and colorful burial chambers of important and less important Romans. And after your visit, you can also visit the castle ruins of Valkenburg. Look around this once mighty castle overlooking Valkenburg. Also well worth a visit!
The prehistoric museum in Boxtel
In Boxtel you will find one of the largest geological excavations in the Netherlands. In the prehistoric museum you can come face to face with dinosaurs, learn all about fossils and discover ancient trees and crops in the Arboretum. Children can have a great time in the large playground. This museum is one big place of discovery!
The North Brabant Museum
The North Brabant Museum in ‘s-Hertogenbosch tells you the story of Brabant. There are also changing exhibitions such as Van Gogh in Brabant and the history of the Efteling. You will also find a lot of art, contemporary and from the past. Please note that reserving a time slot for this museum is mandatory!
The National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden
At the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, you will not only find pieces related to the history of the Netherlands, but also to the rest of the world. For example, you can find masterpieces from Egypt. Due to ever-changing exhibitions, your visit to this museum is never the same.
