Cycling and hiking in Zeeland

In our blog series “biking and hiking in…” today we are going to look at the province of Zeeland. Because you can also bike and hike for miles in Zeeland. Zeeland has a huge amount of coastline, but there are really other areas where you can enjoy nature and culture. We have searched for you the finest Zeeland cycling and hiking routes.
Walking in Zeeland
Walking along the coast of Zeeland is always nice. You can walk part of the Deltapad: the longest coastal path in the Netherlands. It consists of 4 stages and you don’t walk it in one day, because it goes all the way to Groningen! You can walk the first part to Cadzand (14 km). But Zeeland has much more to offer than coast, beach and open plains. There is much more!
Botanical walking route
Near Goes, over the Bloemendijken, you can walk a very nice walking route of 4.5 kilometers. So great fun for kids too! During this hike you walk through centuries-old cultural landscape with dikes and pools. And beautiful plants of course, otherwise it wouldn’t be a botanical walking route. The starting point of this Natuurmonumenten walk is the sheepfold in Heinkenszand and you follow the yellow arrows.
Heritage walk on Schouwen-Duiveland
This walk passes Slot Haamstede and the Atlantikwall bunkers, among other places. Also this walk is not too long with its 5.6 km. So very doable! Starting point is the Slot and there you can also park your car. Follow the red arrows. A nice varied walk for the whole family!
City Discovery Tour Zierikzee
If you prefer an urban walk, then the Stadsontdekkingstocht in Zierikzee is highly recommended. On this 5-kilometer tour, you walk along the route of merchants and pirates. You will pass all kinds of monuments including the Dikke Toren which you can climb. This is no less than 62 meters high so you have a nice view.
City discovery tour Veere
Another nice city walk is that of Veere (Walcheren). This walk (of 3.3 or 3.5 km) takes you past all the highlights of history. Make fun discoveries when you pay attention to inscriptions, gable stones and house names. So keep your eyes peeled during this walk! You will even pass the oldest inn in the Netherlands: the Campveerse Toren. Even William of Orange ate here!
Cycling in Zeeland
Zeeland is also a great place for cycling enthusiasts. You can make it as crazy as you want, so throw the bike on the back of the car and discover this province!
Cycling in Zuid-Beveland
You can take a fun bike ride along winding creeks and cool casemates. This bike ride is 35.8 km and don’t forget to bring your binoculars because there are lots of birds to spot here! This bike tour will lead you past Fort Ellewoutsdijk, among other places. Take a break there to walk to the viewpoint on top of the fort. Starting point is the Infopoint Zwaakse Weel and you can download the route on the route app of Natuurmonumenten.
Cycling around Slot Haamstede
That there is beautiful nature around Slot Haamstede we already told you in the “walking” section. But you can also enjoy cycling there! Set aside a whole day for this 53.8 km bicycle route, as you will come across all kinds of nice things along the way, such as a watchtower (Schelphoek).
Experience route: Expedition Delta
Do you have good legs and are you interested in Zeeland’s Delta Works? Then the Experience Route: Expedition Delta is for you. The route is no less than 214 kilometers, but then you’ll actually pass by the Delta Works. Along the way, learn all about the protection of Zeeland’s coast after the 1953 flood disaster.
