Then there are several great walking apps for you to download. Walk The City is a walking app with city walks for every level. With clear pictures and pleasant navigation you can easily find your way. The app is free. Stadswandelingen.app is a super handy and complete walking app that should not be missing on your smartphone. Besides walks in the Netherlands, you can also use it for Belgium, France and Germany. The app is free. Are you a fan of Urban Streetart? Then the Rewriters App is for you! There you will find among other things very cool street art routes through Rotterdam. And the best part: it’s free. Another great walking app in Rotterdam is the Burgemeesterroute (Mayor Abutaleb). He likes to go for a walk during his break and he likes to share it with you in a free app!

Walking apps for both city and nature walks

With WandelZapp you are guaranteed good and beautiful routes, according to the ANWB. The first walk through the app is free, after that you pay a small fee per walk. You can walk in the city or in nature and choose from short or long walks. So there is something for everyone! The app is continuously updated, so you always have the latest hiking information in your pocket. The Klompenpaden app contains a bit of both worlds. They are obviously not city walks, but neither are they 100% in nature. Really fun to do though! For Android and IPhone and is free. Ommetje.nl is an initiative of the Brain Foundation and has routes in both urban and natural environments. Ommetje is free.

Hiking apps for walks in nature

The RouteYou hiking app is ideal for beautiful walks in Dutch nature. The basis of this app is free, if you are looking for more functionality there is also a paid version. Natuurmonumenten has also developed a nature walking app that can be downloaded for Android and IPhone. This app is free of charge. Water company Vitens knows how important and healthy walking is for a person. They therefore developed a free app with walks in the areas where they extract water. The hiking app Komoot is a very well-known and nice app for walks (and bike rides!) in nature. The first region you create in the app is free, this is forever, but every next region is paid. Besides hiking, do you also want to bike and even run? Then Strava ‘s app is very nice and works motivating. The app is basically free, but it does contain in-app purchases. Like several of the previously mentioned apps.

Hiking apps for kids

Hiking apps have also been created that are fun for young and old alike. For example, there is always a game element to the walk. The app from Vossenstreken is especially for Brabant and its surroundings. You set off with Robin, your virtual hiking buddy. Robin asks questions along the way, so keep paying attention! Geocaching is also great fun to do with children.

Prefer offline?

Do you prefer to go out without an app? Then opt for a city walk from The Little Walk of Horrors! These are only city walks for people who can take a bit of a beating: because you will discover the dark side of the city. During a Horror Walk you will learn all about the (often bloody) history of the city ánd afterwards you will know which buildings are haunted. A city walk of The Little Walk of Horrors can be done when it suits you and at your own pace. The Horrorwalks are suitable for children 12 years and older and super interesting!
