Escape Game La Casa de Papel at TIME in Utrecht

Through our partnership with Escaperoom TIME, we actually got to visit with some of our readers on March 18 to play their cool escape game La Casa de Papel. Unfortunately, the Corona crisis prevented us from playing the game. But now we have played the game. And fun it was! But also very exciting until the last few minutes. No idea what to make of this game? We tell you how it was.

Escaperoom TIME

Escaperoom TIME is located in Utrecht. And TIME is not just any escaperoom, but one that combines the classic escape game with Virtual Reality (VR). They offer multiple games, from the classic escaperoom, to VR shooter, city games and online game shows. And so also the game La Casa de Papel.

La Casa de Papel

For those who don’t know La Casa de Papel; This is a popular Spanish-language Netflix series where a gang of robbers get trapped in the Spanish Mint in order to print millions in paper money in a couple of days and slip it away through a tunnel. In the process, of course, they take a group of people hostage and the entire police force is outside to rescue the hostages and take the robbers into custody. The robbers have assigned themselves names of different cities such as Rio, Tokyo, Nairobi, Oslo and Berlin and are led by the mastermind: El Profesor.

The Escape Game

In the game from Escaperoom TIME, you find yourself in a room decorated in the style of the executive office in the Spanish Mint for an hour and a half. The mission is: open the safe and you have won the game. But this doesn’t happen overnight, of course. Not only do you have to search for various tools, crack codes, open locked cabinets, but you have to expand your search field into a virtual world.

Virtual Reality (VR)

In fact, in addition to the tools present in the room, you will also have access to VR glasses. Through these glasses, you will enter the world of El Profesor and his rover team. So you don’t just have to search the room for tools and codes. Some of the tools that take you to the vault can also be found in this virtual world. And to make the game even more challenging, in this you not only work together, but also in teams. In fact, your group will be split into two or three to determine which team manages to open the vault the fastest. And so who is the ultimate winner!

Corona Measures

Of course, we had to observe Corona measures in this game as well. Upon entry there was neat disinfection equipment and the game leader immediately informed which team members were from the same household and between whom distance had to be kept. This turned out to be two by two. Once in the room, it turned out to be more than spacious enough. Our team tables were spaced a good distance apart and also at the table there was only one chair on each side so that sufficient distance could also be kept between them. There was disinfection equipment in the room to be able to clean the VR glasses and there were stickers on the floor indicating which places you were not allowed to stand if someone else was already there. All very neatly arranged.

Our experience

We played the escape game with 8 people. We were divided into two teams of four. We were allowed to decide which strategy we used. One team chose to put one teammate in the VR world and the other three went to work in the room. The other team alternated VR goggles so we could help each other find the right clues. After the introduction of the game, all eight of us went to work equally blood-fanatic. Of course, I can’t divulge anything now about the course of the game, the attributes and the hints. But I can tell you that it was really very exciting. Precisely because we competed against each other as teams with the same assignment, you get to see how far along the other team is and notice if you are behind or if they are breathing down your neck. Occasionally we had cracked a code and knew that the other team wasn’t that far along. A brief moment of euphoria, only to come back to a place where at first you really don’t know how to get through for a moment.

The grand finale

In the last ten minutes of the game we appeared to have squandered our lead and the other team was in the same spot. And we all knew this was the final bump. If we completed this task we would get to the key to the vault. The drops of sweat could be seen on our foreheads and the nails were chipped from the team members who had to watch to see if his VR player was going to succeed. And then…… the other team got through faster and they walked away with the loot….!!!!

The game was really super fun and everyone was equally enthusiastic.

After the game we had a nice dinner at Restaurant Op Zuid, with which escaperoom TIME offers several packages. This way we could chat about the game and share our experiences with each other.
