De Kameleon Tour

Who are they again, Hielke and Sietse? Not everyone’s light bulb will come on immediately, but for years children have grown up with the adventures of the twins from Lenten in the De Kameleon books. The book, The Skippers of the Chameleon from 1949 was even filmed in 2013 and in 2018 the little adventurers also had their own TV series.

Terherne: the “village” of De Kameleon

De Kameleon

During our (mini)vacations we always like to look for a piece of history of the area where we are at that moment. In this case, it was obvious that we were looking for the village of Lenten. As it turns out, that doesn’t really exist, but they made Terherne into a worthy Chameleon village. A beautiful destination on the Sneekermeer lake with several vacation parks. The small village has many nice restaurants such as ‘t Schippershuis, Eetcafé ‘t Far and De Gouden Leeuw, an ice cream parlor and a neighborhood supermarket.

From the village ‘De Kameleon’ departs regularly to the Adventure Island, where children can romp around. But also in the village of Terherne you will find much of De Kameleon. The recreated village of Lenten, the Kameleon farm and even Smederij Klinkhamer can be found there. Just outside the village sits restaurant Lake Lenten. Unfortunately due to coronagraphs, we could not visit that at this time.

More iconic Chameleon places

Woudagemaal

But, as lovers of the Chameleon, we also went outside the village in search of recognizable places. For example, we visited the Unesco Heritage Woudagemaal in Lemmer, where Hielke and Sietse saved the building from explosives. This 100-year-old pumping station exudes history and still has an important function for the Frisian waters today. During this visit you will learn all about its operation and the impressive steam pumping station is impressive for young and old.

A good ending

Friesland

We ended our Frisian tour with a visit to Sneek. A beautiful town, with all the familiar stores, but also nice boutiques like Jensen, Fiftysix and ZoKids and interior design stores like the Ideetje. Of course we couldn’t leave without brand fresh sugar bread, at the best bakery in Sneek (advised from the ‘locals’): Bakery De Haan.
