From eating out in the vault, to a night in the cell in Almelo

Yes really, and completely voluntarily too. About once or twice a year I try to plan some quality time with my husband. We always go to a place or area we are not (very) familiar with. This time we went to Twente, the region of the ‘Tukkers’. Beautiful nature and pleasant villages and cities, such as Hengelo, Enschede and Almelo. We deliberately chose Almelo because of the special hotel, Huis van Bewaring and the restaurant, Ledeboer.
Almelo is a cozy, compact city. The stores are close together and in addition to the well-known chain stores, you will also find nice local boutiques. On every corner you can find a nice restaurant with a terrace, so there is plenty of opportunity to rest and take care of the inner man. A visit to the Bolletje museum is also worthwhile. There you can dive back into the history of Bolletje rusks, which have been made there since 1867.

Almelo has given several historic buildings a new purpose, including the old bank building that houses restaurant Ledeboer. The 1909-built bank building of the bankers Ledeboer & Co. is since 2017 restaurant Ledeboer, with a Bib Gourmand award from Michelin. This evening we experienced that this recognition is more than deserved. Each dish of the four-course menu was surprising and flavorful, the matching wine pairing completed it. And not unimportantly, the service was good and they knew how to inform us well about the dishes and wines. The restaurant has been stylishly restored and the old elements such as the vaults can still be found here. That completes the experience.
We spent the night in one of the cells of hotel Huis van Bewaring. Here we felt a little bit like Bonnie & Clyde. Built in 1926, the jail served as a prison until 1995 and has been a hotel since 2004. All the original elements have been preserved and stylishly incorporated into the furnishings. Fortunately for the rooms, they merged 2 cells together, making these valuable rooms. Besides the cells, you can also choose to sleep in, for example, one of jailer’s rooms. After a delicious breakfast, we managed to escape and fled to our own house 😉.
In short Almelo is definitely worth a visit, a nice combination of nature and city.
