Fun beach activities on the Dutch coast

For those spending the summer on the Dutch coast, there are a lot of different things you can do besides lying on your beach bed and enjoying the summer sun. The Dutch coast has something fun to offer for everyone who loves the sea, sand and sun. Whether you are looking for a day of adventure or just want to relax, there is something for everyone. Read here several tips for fun beach activities you can do on the Dutch coast:
Water sports
For the adventurous types, there are plenty of water sports to enjoy. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, supping and wave surfing are particularly popular. And are you already familiar with Wingfishing? This is a new way of surfing where you hold the wing (a kind of kite) while standing on a board with a kind of wing sword that floats you above the water. Seaside resorts such as IJmuiden, Katwijk, Scheveningen, Hoek van Holland and Brouwersdam are known for their excellent conditions for these sports. For beginners, schools and rental outlets are often available.
Beach sailing
Beach sailing, also known as blokarting, is an exciting activity where you ride across the beach in a small, sail-powered vehicle. With the wind in your sails, you can reach high speeds and it’s a great way to get an adrenaline rush. Look out for beach sailing centers in Ouddorp or Hoek van Holland, for example.
Beach volleyball
Beach volleyball is a fun way to stay active and have fun on the beach. Many beaches, such as those in Scheveningen and Zandvoort, have nets and courts available where you can play a game with friends. It is a sport suitable for all ages and levels.
Shell search
A quiet and relaxing activity for young and old is shell searching. The beaches of the Netherlands are rich in various kinds of shells and sea creatures. You can find the razor clam, the whelk and the cockle, among others, but special finds such as the nipple horn and the venus shell are also common. After a storm, there is a good chance that there are extra many shells on the beach because the waves bring more material ashore. It’s a fun way to take home a souvenir of your day at the sea.
Kite flying
Kite flying is a timeless and simple beach activity that is especially popular with families. Places like Scheveningen, Zandvoort and the Wadden Islands are particularly suitable for this activity. The constant wind from the North Sea ensures that your kite will almost always take to the air, even on days with less than perfect weather conditions.
There are different types of kites you can use, depending on your experience and what you like. Single-line kites are ideal for beginners and children. They are easy to launch and control and offer lots of fun without too much hassle. For more advanced kite flyers, stunt kites are a fun option. With two lines, you can perform impressive maneuvers and tricks. This does require a bit more skill and practice. Powerkites are larger kites that can be used for more extreme sports such as kitesurfing and baby carriage kiting. They generate a lot of power and are suitable for those looking for an adrenaline rush.
Beach Walks
The Netherlands’ long, expansive beaches are perfect for long walks. Whether you walk along the tide line or stroll through the dunes, the view of the North Sea is always breathtaking. Popular places for beach walks include the beaches of Zandvoort, Scheveningen and Texel.
Horseback riding along the beach
For a unique experience, take a horseback ride along the coast. There are several riding stables along the coast that offer rides even for people without riding experience. Such as Manege Beresteijn in The Hague, Manege Bakker in Noordwijk and Manege Duno in Zeeland. Galloping through the surf is an unforgettable experience that gives you a sense of freedom.
Cycling through the dunes
The Netherlands is known for its excellent bike trails, and the dunes along the coast are no exception. The cycling routes offer a mix of nature, sea views and cozy coastal towns. Rent a bike in places like Noordwijk or Egmond aan Zee and enjoy the fresh sea air.
Seal spotting
The Wadden Islands, such as Texel and Terschelling, offer unique opportunities to see seals in their natural habitat. There are several boat trips available that take you to sandbanks where these beautiful animals can often be seen.
Chill out at one of the many beach pavilions
After a day of activities, there is nothing better than chilling out at one of the many beach pavilions found along the coast. Enjoy a refreshing drink, delicious food and the relaxed atmosphere. In our blog Our favorite beach bars, we have listed several great beach pavilions.
