Get to know your neighbors better and organize some fun!

How well do you know your neighbors? Do you interact well with them but stick to “good morning” and “have a nice day today?” How much more fun is the neighborhood when you do fun things together? So we have tips for you, because really, every day is Neighbor’s Day!
National Neighborhood Day
In September 2006, coffee brand Douwe Egberts devised National Neighborhood Day. A fun day for and by the street with the aim of getting to know each other better. Burendag is still a great success. This year, for example, this cozy day will be celebrated on September 28. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be Neighbor’s Day to organize fun things together. So get a few friendly neighbors together to organize something fun and the neighborhood will definitely be a lot cozier!
Eating together
Food has brought people together for centuries. It will never be any different! So organize a cozy street BBQ, a street picnic or a neighborhood get-together. You can suggest that everyone make some tasty food and bring it themselves. In streets where many different cultures live, this is extra fun because you not only get to know the neighbors, but also their delicious food! By the way, you don’t have to be a kitchen princess to do this!
Street flea market
You all have stuff in the shed or attic that you don’t use anymore and is really in the way. But maybe your neighbor or wife happens to need just that one part, appliance or discarded children’s toys that are gathering dust at your place! So organize a street flea market! We bet you’ll be rid of your stuff in no time! And who knows, at the end of the afternoon you might even end up with a lot of useful items!
Children’s party
What is also fun for neighborhood children is to organize, for example, an Old Dutch games afternoon or splash afternoon. Old Dutch games are always fun. Should the weather be bad, you can set up some tables under a party tent. Then the board games can come out. Of course, on a hot day, it is a lot of fun to organize a splash afternoon. Pull the children’s pools, water guns and other water toys out of the closet and have a great time! It is also fun to invite an ice cream or fries stand or to organize a delicious BBQ afterwards.
Also fun for the kids is a bouncy castle! Or perhaps several bouncy castles together for a real bouncy party. Maybe your son or daughter will discover a new friend to play with! Or organize a fun craft afternoon! Around Halloween it is of course fun to decorate pumpkins, but autumn crafts, making a cozy street sign together, or a giant drawing all together is also fun!
Beautifully decorated
Make your whole street special by agreeing with neighbors to decorate the street. For example, at Halloween or Christmas, it is very nice if everyone decorates his/her own house nicely. Or in summer with fun outdoor lanterns! You can find cheap decorations at Xenos, Action, So Low and Big Bazar. It doesn’t even have to be expensive!
The children can then choose the most beautiful house. That one, of course, gets the title “most beautifully decorated house” for a year. And it just looks really cozy! But decorating can of course also be done by putting cozy plants in the front yard!
Friendly neighborhood clubs
Being active together also creates a bond in the neighborhood. For example, start a cozy walking club, play cards together every week, go swimming, walk the dogs, ride bikes and you name it! Unfortunately, the weather is not always nice in the Netherlands.
But even with less nice weather, you can continue to do fun things with your neighbors. Organize a book club, hold movie nights, start a neighborhood band or start a cooking club with some neighbors.
Individual fun things
Of course, you can also do your own fun things for your neighbors. For example, you can create a mini library where neighbors can exchange and borrow books. Or bring some goodies to that lonely widower or that less fortunate family. Or invite someone who lives alone over for coffee. Even small things can make the neighborhood more fun. So cross that threshold and ring the doorbell!
