Nice and active – Canoeing in Utrecht

If you are looking for a sports outing, there is plenty to do in our country. Cycling, climbing, hiking or water sports. Often you will find these kinds of activities in the many natural areas our small country contains. But did you know that you can also just get active right in the middle of town? For example, you can go canoeing in Utrecht’s canals. Our guest blogger Fenne already has experience with this and loves to share it with us!
Canoeing, with or without reservation
At canoe rental Utrecht on the Oudegracht, you can reserve a spot in advance, but if you are already in the neighborhood you can also go without a reservation. From Utrecht Central Station it is about a 10 minute walk through the city. If you prefer to come by bike, I advise you to park your bike in bike park Vredenburg. This is a guarded bike park where you can park your bike for free.
Choose your route before departure
Kanoverhuur Utrecht offers several boating routes which you can find on their boating map on the website. You can choose a route of 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours or rent the canoe for a whole day. You simply follow the chosen dotted line on the map, which is easy to follow because the bridges you encounter on the route are clearly marked. You will also find on the map some more sights to see along the route. You can choose from 1-person canoes and 2-person canoes.
Fenne’s route
I did the 1.5-hour route myself and found it just right. With this route you sail the first part through the canals past houses. Then you come to the city outer ring. This is a lot wider water and a quieter environment with more nature. The last part you paddle through the canals again, but now along the terraces. After 1.5 hours of canoeing you will be quite hungry, so it is definitely advisable to sit down at one of these terraces after your trip to end your day!
Have fun,
Fenne
