Naar buiten in de winter

In the winter, you might be more inclined to stay inside under your blanket, but what’s the fun in that? Go outside, get some fresh air and then get warm again when you’re back inside. We have such great tips for you that you won’t want to stay inside anymore!

Be prepared

For those going out in winter, good preparation is a must. Especially if you are going hiking in a nature reserve, for example, the following tips are definitely not a luxury.

Check the weather forecast in advance

A clue, perhaps, but in the winter months just a little more important than in other seasons. Is rain predicted? Bring a raincoat or poncho. Dress in layers so you stay warm but don’t overheat along the way. Also important: wear waterproof shoes or boots you can walk well in. Waterproof socks also exist, but by wearing waterproof shoes, you don’t actually need them.

Bring food and drink

If you go hiking in a nature reserve, you will not easily find places where you can sit down for coffee and a snack. So always bring something from home. You might even decide to have a winter outdoor picnic! Replace your bottle of water with a thermos with tea or coffee. Always delicious.

Make sure you are visible

Are you going out early in the morning or just in the afternoon? Then it’s wise to wear reflective clothing. You can also bring an arm light and put it on as soon as it starts to get a little dim. Many hikers (and cyclists!) in the winter don’t quite kill how poorly visible they actually are. Going hiking in a nature preserve? Then take a flashlight with you, too, just to be on the safe side.

Nice walks in winter

Venture into nature this winter! In winter, Dutch nature has something magical. It is quiet everywhere, the light is different making everything seem sharper and afterwards you have lovely pink cheeks from the cold. Natuurmonumenten has wonderful winter walks for you. But the beach is also a great place to be in winter. And the nice thing is: the dog can come along in winter! Afterwards getting warm in an all-season beach tent is of course a nice reward.

Cycling in winter

Hop on your bike this winter! Pack yourself warm and don’t forget your gloves. The winter landscape is beautiful, provided it is not slippery! The last thing you want is a fall. Cycle for example the route between Scheveningen and Kijkduin! Cycle through Meijendel nature reserve and across the Scheveningen Pier. The advantage is that there are plenty of catering establishments along the way to catch your breath. Or choose a beautiful bicycle route in Limburg.

Go ice skating

In the Netherlands there are many places to skate in the winter, even though we haven’t had real natural ice for a long time. For example, go ice skating in Amsterdam at the Amsterdam Winterparadijs or skate around Gouda Town Hall until January 12. For more skating tips, check out this blog.
