Safe in the sun – tips for healthy skin
The sun is shining regularly again and the summer vacations are already approaching. Many people then traditionally leave for sunny places or enjoy the sun on our own Dutch beaches. But too much sun can damage your skin. Therefore, prepare your skin well. The beauticians at Blitz Wellness will help you with a number of useful tips so that you can go out into the sun safely.
Let your skin get used to the sun slowly. This prevents your skin from burning on vacation. But it is also a lifelong investment. After all, skin that is badly burned once remains extra sensitive to the sun for a lifetime.
Prepare your skin with a few tanning sessions
In recent years, awareness about tanning has increased. More and more people are putting on sunscreen with a high sun protection factor. Safe tanning is really a thing of our time. Tanning under a tanning bed should be done in a controlled manner. Unlike natural sunlight, we can adjust the dosage of a tanning bed to your skin type.
At Blitz Wellness, they attach great importance to ensuring that their customers tan in a dosed and safe manner, which is why all their tanning beds are equipped with an Easycare skin computer. With this easycare skin measurement, the sunbed can be set to the exact strength for your skin. Burning is therefore a thing of the past.
Use the right sunscreen in the outdoor sun
Sunscreen products are made specifically to prevent sunburn. They contain UV filters, so less UV radiation reaches the skin. However, one product that filters all UV radiation does not exist. Each skin type requires a different UV filter. Get expert advice for the right sunscreen. Even sunscreens that are highly effective and protect against both UV-A(Aging) radiation and UV-B(Burning) radiation cannot provide complete protection.
Natural protection
Another – natural – protection mechanism is the formation of melanin under the influence of the sun. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their color. By getting a tan, the skin protects itself, so to speak. Eating a lot of carotene (carrots) provides good protection from the sun. Moreover, it gives a nice tan quickly.
Protection factor
The protection factor of a sunscreen is indicated by SPF (Sun Protection Factor). The SPF must be chosen carefully and depends on your skin type. In addition to the SPF factor, good sunscreens are also marked PA . Wherein the designation with four pluses offers the best protection.
Skin types and SPF
- Skin type I: Very light skin. People with this skin type tan very little or not at all and burn very quickly. Recommended SPF 25-30.
- Skin type II: light skin. A person with this skin type will burn quickly and tan only slowly. Recommended SPF 15-25.
- Skin type III: lightly toned skin. These people do not burn as quickly and tan easily. Recommended SPF 10-15.
- Skin type IV: tinted skin. A person with this skin type tans quickly and almost never burns. Recommended SPF 5-10.
Ten golden rules for tanning
In 1995, leading Dutch skin specialists and scientists, together with the tanning industry, the Dutch Cancer Society/KWF and many other experts created ten guidelines:
- Enjoy the sun, but think about your skin.
- Let your skin get used to the sun gently and avoid sunburn.
- Seek shade between noon-15 p.m.
- In full sun, preferably wear a cap or sun hat and clothing.
- Going out in the sun for a long time? Then apply proper sunscreen to uncovered skin.
- Ask a beautician about the proper protection factor.
- Follow instructions for use of tanning equipment carefully.
- Ask for personal advice at a tanning salon.
- Get out of the sun and certainly not under the sunbed if your skin reacts strangely with, for example, rashes, itching or rapid burning.
- Consult a doctor if necessary.
- UV radiation helps with some skin conditions, but not with others.
- Seek the advice of a skin doctor.
