The tastiest savory snacks for New Year’s Eve

Oliebollen and apple turnovers are, of course, familiar to everyone as New Year’s Eve snacks, but there are many other tasty treats to consider. Especially savory snacks. And we have tips for you! Because that New Year’s Eve lasts a long time, so there can be extra snacking. And that’s okay at this time because we just have to treat ourselves.
Savory snacks
You can pop some bitterballen in the oven or put chips on the table, but it’s much more fun (and tasty) to make something yourself. Even if you celebrate New Year’s Eve only with your own family. Skip dinner and make it a sort of (run-through) buffet with all kinds of tasty, small bites. Here are our tips:
Mini savory tarts
Savory pie is always delicious and really easy. Personally, I always use the savory pie mix from Koopmans, but I’m too lazy to make the pie crust. So I put that aside. Instead I use puff pastry.
For the filling:
- savory cake mix from Koopmans
- 150 ml milk
- 3 eggs
- 100 grams old cheese
- ham strips (or bacon)
- one small leek (thinly sliced)
- a handful of cherry tomatoes (sliced)
- a whisk
- a deep bowl
- muffin tins or small pastry cases
- an oven pre-heated to 220 degrees
Preheat the oven to 220 degrees. Let the puff pastry thaw. Meanwhile, get to work on the filling. Fry the bacon strips (if using) and fill the batter bowl with the eggs, milk and savory cake mix. Then add the aged cheese(keep a little aside), leek rings and ham strips or bacon strips. Mix well. Line the molds (or pie pan) with the puff pastry. Fill the form with the filling. Be sure to stay a little below the rim because the filling will rise during baking. Garnish the tarts with the tomato slices and the cheese you have left over. Place the tart in the oven and bake until golden brown. Enjoy your meal!
Tip: The easiest way is to flatten the thawed puff pastry with a rolling pin. I put the puff pastry on a baking sheet and I put a baking sheet on top. That way you can easily roll without it sticking.
Small chicken skewers
Another tasty snack for New Year’s Eve are small chicken skewers. These are easy to make and very tasty.
What you need:
- chicken breast
- small wooden sticks, for example for tapas
- one bag of marinade mix
- olive oil
- water
- soy sauce manis
- possibly garlic
- peanut sauce
Prepare the marinade by mixing the marinade with olive oil, water, soy sauce and garlic. Cut the chicken breast into small pieces and marinate for a nice long time. Thread the pieces of marinated chicken onto the sticks. Bake them in the oven or in a grill pan. In the meantime, prepare the peanut sauce. Delicious with a baguette! Enjoy this New Year’s Eve!
Wraps with different fillings
Super easy and very tasty: wrap rolls. Everyone likes them and you can vary them endlessly.
What do you need?
- wraps (ready-made from the supermarket)
- Boursain or other herb cheese
- Arugula
- Different fillings such as: chicken breast, carpaccio (tasty with pine nuts and Parmesan cheese, salmon, (raw) ham,
- Or delicious and vegetarian with grilled peppers and possibly goat cheese
Lay the wraps down on a large cutting board and spread lightly with the herb cheese (or yogurt or humus, anything tasty and spreadable). And then top with your favorite toppings! Then roll up and cut into small slices. Guaranteed to be a huge success!
Roasted cashews with herbs
Another easy and delicious snack: homemade roasted cashews with herbs. Really ready in no time!
What you need:
- 170 grams of unsalted cashews
- olive oil (dash)
- sea salt
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- sprig of fresh rosemary
- some fresh thyme (note: this has a rather strong taste)
- baking paper
- an oven pre-heated to 180 degrees
Home baked garlic bread with cheese

- a round loaf of bread (one of those hard farmhouse breads)
- a serrated knife
- an ordinary knife
- tub of herb butter
- slices of cheese (cut into even smaller slices)
- an oven pre-heated to 200 degrees
Take the bread and slice it at the top to create panes. Don’t go all the way through until you reach the bottom of the bread, but it’s okay to cut in a bit so you can fill the bread well later. Take the regular knife and try to spread the herb butter into the incised bread. Also put the small slices of cheese into the sliced open bread. Put the bread in the oven until the cheese is melted. And ready to feast!
We wish you a very fun and most of all tasty New Year’s Eve!
