Are you also so shocked by the energy bill? To keep the costs as low as possible, we have tips for you to save energy. That way you’ll be warm and cosy this autumn!

Saving energy

Everyone is going to feel the increase in energy prices in their wallet. There’s no way around it, so we’d better make the best of it. Fortunately, measures are being taken to cushion the blow, but that’s not all. We will also have to do something about our own consumption. Everyone talks about saving energy by turning down the heating and taking shorter showers. These are certainly steps in the right direction, because the highest costs are in heating your home. But how can you ensure that it will still be pleasant in your home in the coming period?

Set it at 60

One of the easiest ways to save money is to turn down the boiler. It is set at 80 degrees by default. If you set the boiler to 60 degrees, you can save as much as € 1200 on an annual basis! Many people have already lowered the boiler, but if you have not yet done so, it is highly recommended. On this website you can see how to do it by means of instruction videos. You actually only notice it when you turn on the tap. It takes a few seconds longer for the water to heat up. Small effort, big energy savings!

Airing

Open the windows while it’s cold outside? Yes indeed! Fresh air is drier than the more humid “old” air. Dry air is easier to heat, so your house will warm up faster. You certainly don’t need to open the windows all day either. An hour in the morning is enough to save energy. Besides, a well-ventilated room is much better for your health. So open those windows!

Good insulation

To have a warmer home this colder season, you really don’t have to buy an expensive heat pump right away. Or break open the walls to have everything properly insulated. Of course, that is a great solution in the long run, but is a bit difficult to achieve for the upcoming cold period. There is also a cheaper solution, especially for people who have central heating with wall plates. Apply heating foil behind the heater! This can be done with magnets against the back of the plates or with adhesive strips against the wall. The heat no longer disappears into the walls, but is nicely sent into the rooms. A small investment with which you can save a lot of energy.

Heating a few degrees lower

Normally our heating came on in October and stayed on until April. Sometimes it would go on earlier because it was already getting a little chilly in the house. I can now proudly say that the heating at our house has not yet been turned on. How? By dressing a little warmer. No more bare feet, but socks on. A sweater or cardigan when you get chilly and in the evening cozy up with a blanket on the couch. Fortunately, it hasn’t been this cold yet and I know this is going to change. But we won’t turn the heating up to 21.5 degrees this year. We try to do it with 1.5 degree lower. So a maximum of 20 degrees. That should be doable. At least this year slippers are on everyone’s Sinterklaas wish list and that’s fine. Also, Google “cuddly sweater.” Maybe that’s just the thing for you! Especially for colder nights a wonderfully warm alternative. Or you just snuggle up to each other, also cozy!

Lights off, candles on

In addition to gas prices, electricity prices are also rising. Now, of course, you don’t have to sit completely in the dark, but you might want to replace a lamp for a cozy tray of candles. It does seem that burning a lot of candles is again unhealthy. Good ventilation is also important in this case, and don’t overdo it. But lighting a few candles is very cozy. You can also invest in LED candles. These are more durable, they emit no emissions and burn for a long time. Just collect the empty batteries separately of course.

Of course there are many more measures you can take, but don’t get carried away. As mentioned earlier, there will be measures for every household that will keep the extreme cost increase somewhat under control. But it certainly can’t hurt to turn down the heating and take shorter showers, because after all, that’s better for the environment.
