Walking on the moors

My brother-in-law lives in Blaricum. Whenever we are with him and his family, we love to walk in the area. There is a beautiful moor near his house! The other day we went for a nice walk with the family and it was certainly worth repeating.
A short break in our own country
When I’m on the moors, I always feel like I’m on vacation. I live in the Randstad and there the beach is especially close, so this is always very different. Just as vast, but with completely different vegetation. The nature reserve of ‘t Gooi covers a huge area. But we always limit ourselves to the Blaricummerheide.
The Blaricummer Heath
The Blaricummer heath is 132 hectares in size and is separated from the Tafelberg heath by the dirt road “De Oude Naarderweg”. However, it is one area. In the area you will find a number of pits. Those pits are very important because special plant species grow in them. Some potholes are therefore fenced off in the summer so that hikers cannot damage them.
Special animals
When you walk on the moors, you may come face to face with Scottish Highlanders. Very early in the morning my brother-in-law stumbled upon a hazelworm while running. It’s a kind of snake. The sheep from the sheepfold also wander around.
Sheepfold
We also went into the sheepfold for a while and they were nice and inside. Normally the animals walk on the heathland under the guidance of a shepherd. They provide a good balance on the heath there. Inside the sheepfold there was also a map of the whole area and it showed again how huge the area is. So you can really go in all directions!
Fun for children
For children, the moorland is a great adventure. They can climb trees and build huts. The heathland is very surveyable so as a parent you actually always have a good view of your child. Also looking for insects is always fun. You can also bring a soccer ball.
Relax afterwards
Especially in winter, it is great to warm up at a cozy restaurant. Restaurant De Tafelberg is perfect for that! You can go there 7 days a week from 9 in the morning for breakfast, high tea, lunch, drinks or dinner. Or for a nice cup of coffee, of course. In any case, De Tafelberg is a great base and a good starting and finishing point for your hike because you can easily park your car there.
In fact, the parking lot can accommodate 100 cars. Dogs and even horses are welcome. In spring and summer, you can also enjoy sitting on the terrace. In fact, there are 200 seats outside, including 5 lounge houses. Highly recommended!
