Enjoying summer wine
Sun, sea, beach… Summer is on! And what tastes better than a delicious summer wine! Did you know that the increase in temperature also changes your taste? That’s why you probably crave fresher and lighter wines now than in winter. But what then is a typical summer wine? I’ll give you 4 tips for the perfect wine for a balmy summer day or evening.
Fresh and dry
Summer wines are fresh and dry. This provides refreshment. A typical fresh, fruity and dry summer wine is a sauvignon blanc. But most of you are familiar with those. Go for something special like a vinho verde from Portugal! Just something different! Sweet and wood-aged wines may not taste as good now. They often have a fuller, heavier flavor that you might prefer to drink in the winter.
Fruity or floral
A flowery white wine or a rosé also suits summer perfectly! The beautiful pink color is formed because for a rosé blue grapes are used in which the skins ferment very briefly. A rosé is immediately a summer party in your glass and the fruity with a ‘bite’ delicious with both drinks and bbq.
Light with low alcohol
Summer wines are light andtherefore also have a not too high alcohol content. The more alcohol, the heavier the wine comes across and the warmer you get too. So when buying a summer wine, also look at the alcohol content; between 12 and 13% is perfect!
Suitable for cooling
Perhaps an open door but a summer wine is suitable for chilling well. And even a light red wine like a pinot noir or spatburgunder can be served lightly chilled (15 minutes in the fridge)! Most white wines are fine to drink from the refrigerator but taste just a little better if you take them out just before serving. A wine that really has the right temperature right out of the fridge is a sparkling wine! And that really doesn’t always have to be Champagne. Consider a sparkling wine made according to the traditional method from South Africa or Portugal.
