We all know that we should protect our skin with at least SPF 30 in the summer, but we don’t always do this with our hair. Because the UV rays can make your hair dry, damaged and frizzy. Hairstylist Tessa of Quinto hairdressers gives some tips on how to protect your hair.

Leave in

Put a leave-in conditioner in your hair with SPF. This is good for both your hair and scalp. Spray the conditioner over your scalp and hair after showering and your hair is protected and smells great too. When buying, make sure the leave in contains UVA and UVB filters for optimal protection.

Hair mask

Prevent and limit sun damage with a hair mask. After a day in the sun, your hair often feels a bit drier. You can remedy this by using a hair mask once in a while. That way, your hair will retain a little more moisture again and will no longer be frizzy and dry. Leave the mask on for a few minutes and then rinse it out.

Apply nourishing oil

Apply a nourishing oil or serum to your hair and comb it all the way through. Then put your hair in a bun to create a barrier against the sun. This will keep your hair moisturized and protected throughout the day. Be sure to also protect your parting with sunscreen or wear your hair back.

Wear a hat, scarf or other accessories

Perhaps one of the most obvious options: a hat. This not only protects your hair, but also your face and neck. For example, go for a straw hat, a bucket hat or a simple cap. There is no more stylish protection from the sun.

Don’t forget to protect your hair from chlorine, too!

Because chlorine removes natural oils and moisture from your hair, making it dry a lot faster. And in addition, if you have blonde hair, you may even find that your hair takes on a green undertone.

So wear, for example, a high bun or your hair in a clip to make sure it doesn’t come into contact with chlorine at all. But if you still prefer to go underwater, get into the shower first and wet your hair with water (that does not contain chlorine). This way, your hair will absorb this water instead of the chlorinated water. You can also do this after your swim to rinse out the chlorine.

After a day in the pool, condition your hair with a fine conditioner or a conditioning mask. Finish with a good UV protective leave-in with SPF to get back on the road fully protected.
