Where do you find the most mushrooms?

It’s autumn! And that means there are plenty of mushrooms in the forests again. There are as many as 3500 species of mushrooms in the Netherlands! It is impossible to find them all in one place, but we have found places where there are lots of them! Oh, and going for a walk in the woods at this time of year is not wrong anyway. Actually, forests are at their most beautiful in autumn!
South Holland
In South Holland, you can find the most mushrooms at Lusthof de Haeck Nature Reserve near the Nieuwkoop lakes. This fairytale forest area is completely full of mushrooms. Once a private hunting and fishing area, this area is truly beautiful with its winding narrow paths. Bring your camera and go!
North Holland
In North Holland, we found three places teeming with mushrooms. In National Park Kennemerland around Duin and Kruidberg, for example. Here Scottish Highlanders graze and it is teeming with mushrooms. Truly a beautiful place! And after a long walk you can relax at the beautiful country house.
Het Zwanenwater nature reserve near Callantsoog is also a true mushroom paradise. Here grow mushrooms with the most unusual names! Ever heard of the Snowy Mushroom? Or the Velvet Mushroom? And do you know the rare Aardtongue which can sometimes be found here right next to the path?
The ‘s-Gravenlandse Buitenplassen is a collection of beautiful parks and country estates in the Gooi and Vecht region. The old park forests are teeming with mushrooms!
Utrecht
In the middle of National Park the Utrechtse Heuvelrug you will find the Kaapse Bossen. During your walk in the forest, you’ll find an enormous amount of mushrooms there. And from the watchtower you have a fantastic view of all the autumn colors of the forest.
Drenthe
The National Park Dwingelderveld is also a place where many mushrooms can be found. This is because dead wood is allowed to lie around here and they love it! You can also do an exciting evening walk. This is highly recommended, even with children. You can read more about it in this blog.
Flevoland
Our youngest province immediately does have the most (species of) mushrooms! There are two locations you should not miss as a mushroom lover. The first is the Waterloopbos. The soil of this nature reserve is a perfect breeding ground for them. You’ll find hundreds of species there!
The Voosterbos is the mushroom reserve of Europe! Of the 3500 mushroom species in the Netherlands, you will find no less than 800 here! Grab your camera because this really is a special place!
Organized mushroom walks
Do you want to be sure to encounter mushrooms during your scavenger hunt? Then take a guided mushroom walk! Take a walk with the Mushroom Man, for example. He gives tours through the forests of Apeldoorn, the Veluwe and Laage Vuursche. Super fun and educational! Natuurmonumenten also has several guided mushroom walks. At Landgoed Tongelen in Brabant you can also look for mushrooms with a guide. And the Dutch Forestry Commission has many walks and activities related to mushrooms.
You are not supposed to bring mushrooms from the woods. This way more people can enjoy all this beauty. Moreover, they can be poisonous. Of course, you can always take pictures!
