Alphen aan den Rijn
Archeon
In Archeon in Alphen aan den Rijn you literally step into history! This open-air museum shows how people lived in prehistory, during Roman times and in the Middle Ages. Children can participate themselves in various activities such as sword fighting, calligraphy and archery. There is also a playground for toddlers. Archeon lends itself perfectly to a family day – kids can canoe, go on scavenger hunts and end up at a cozy campfire in the evening. You can even spend the night there. Archeon is especially fun for families with children up to about 12 years old.
Amsterdam
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
The Rijksmuseum is a fantastic museum to visit with kids! Located in Amsterdam, the museum offers an engaging and educational experience for the whole family. The museum has special children’s activities, family tours and a Junior app that makes the visit more interactive. Children can go on quests through the halls with assignments developed especially for them.
Science Museum NEMO
Do your kids love experiments, but would rather not let them try it out at home? Then they can have a blast at NEMO. This science museum is the largest science museum in the Netherlands and is for everyone who is curious. There is always lots to discover in the interactive exhibitions. Put on your lab coat and get to work in the Workshop, discover the mysteries of science on different floors.
Ripley’s Curiosity Cabinet Believe it or Not!
Ripley’s Believe it or Not! in Amsterdam is truly a fun museum for young and old. Robert Ripley, a world traveler, brought back all the crazy, scary and funny things from all over the world. He collected all his curiosities in a museum. This was such a success that museums of his can now be found all over the world, including at De Dam in Amsterdam. Children can try everything themselves and there is a lot to see, experience and learn!
The Maritime Museum Amsterdam
Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam offers fun activities for children throughout the year. For example, children ages 6 and up can enjoy various programs and for children ages 8 and up there are VR experiences aboard historic ships. Learn all about life aboard a ship and Dutch maritime history. The museum also has a beautiful historical ship that you can walk through.
Arnhem
Open Air Museum
The Open Air Museum in Arnhem is definitely recommended for families as well. Here you experience how people in the Netherlands lived and worked throughout the centuries. Children can participate in old crafts, play historical games and enjoy the beautiful nature. The museum also has a historic streetcar that runs through the park.
Delft
Science Centre Delft
The Science Centre in Delft is part of TU Delft and here young and old can learn about science and technology. Here is a reflection of recent research and student projects that you can check out, but you are also challenged to get started yourself. There are regular fun kids’ workshops for ages 6 and up, as well as challenging workshops for adults. The research projects are changed regularly, so it’s definitely worth coming back later.
The Hague
Prison Gate
The Gevangenpoort in The Hague is a museum more suitable for slightly older children (from about 10 years of age). The small prison building across from the Binnenhof is literally bursting at the seams with history. A lot has happened in this place and the guides are happy to tell you about it. The stories are exciting but can be a bit scary for younger children. After your visit to the Gevangenpoort, you can relax on a nice Hague terrace or go shopping in town.
Madurodam
In miniature city Madurodam in The Hague, see all the typical Dutch hotspots in one day. It doesn’t stop at just looking. For example, roll up your sleeves together at the windmills. Like the new Armin van Buuren or Afrojack, children can mix beats themselves and make the inhabitants of Madurodam dance to the music. It’s much more interactive than many people think!
Museon-Omniversum
The Museon-Omniversum in The Hague is also definitely fun to visit with kids. The museum combines science, nature and culture in an interactive way. Children can experiment and discover for themselves here. The Omniversum also offers spectacular film screenings in a 360-degree domed hall – a real experience!
Eindhoven
preHistoric Village
The preHistoric Village in Eindhoven is the open-air museum where you can experience 15,000 years of history! For more than 40 years visitors can go back in time and discover how the first farmers worked, what the Romans did and how people hunted in prehistoric times. Children meet historical residents in authentic costumes and learn old crafts such as baking bread by the fire. The museum has been voted the Kidsproof museum of North Brabant for several years.
Groningen
Groninger Museum
The Groninger Museum in Groningen is the absolute hit for families with children! The museum is the proud winner of the Museumkids Award 2025 and received this award for the most innovative and inspiring public program in the Netherlands for children up to 12 years of age.
Children and youth up to 18 years old have free admission to the museum – making it extra attractive for families! The museum is known for its interactive exhibitions and child-friendly approach. It offers tours, studio visits and scavenger hunts especially for children. It is a place where children can see, hear, feel and make – perfect for creative explorers! The museum combines art, design and history in a way that truly captivates children.
Storyworld
Next to the Groninger Museum, in Forum Groningen, you will find the modern museum Storyworld. Here everything revolves around comics, animation and games – a world in which children often immediately recognize themselves. You will discover how superheroes are drawn, the techniques behind animated films and how games are made. Children can draw, try out and discover for themselves. The museum is set up interactively, so you don’t just watch but actually participate. Ideal for creative and curious children ages 8 and up, but secretly great fun for adults who think back to their own favorite comics and games with a smile.
Herwijnen – West Betuwe
GeoFort
The GeoFort in Herwijnen is an interactive science center on a real fort island where everything revolves around geo(graphy). Children aged 4 to 104 can learn about maps, navigation, climate and big data in a playful way here. Step into an elevator and take a journey to the center of the earth! There are exciting scavenger hunts, mazes and challenging activities with augmented reality and virtual discoveries. The fort is known as one of the best children’s museums in the world and was even named number 4 out of 88 Dutch forts. The GeoFort has both indoor and outdoor activities and a free-to-visit area with a restaurant and climbing playground.
Lelystad
Aviodrome
A day at Aviodrome is educational for the whole family. At Aviodrome you will find 6000 m² of aircraft history. What is also nice: besides an outdoor area there is also an indoor area. So bad weather is no excuse not to go. This museum has something for everyone. There is plenty to do for children and for adults it is also very interesting. For example, a large part of the museum is set up about World War II.
Noordwijk
Space Expo
Is your child also fascinated by the universe? Then a visit to the Space Expo in Noordwijk is definitely worthwhile. Here the little aspiring astronaut can indulge to his or her heart’s content. For example, you can see what the Soyuz capsule looks like on which André Kuipers flew to the ISS station in space. The museum also has regular special activities and workshops for children.
Oegstgeest
Corpus
Is your child older than 6? Then it might be fun to learn more about the human body. Not only educational for the kids but also for you! Literally travel through the human body in 55 minutes. At Corpus you will learn how our body is put together, how it works and what you need to do to keep it healthy. The audio tour takes you on a journey through the huge giant you can see from afar along the highway. You start in the knee and come back out at the brain. Really very interesting and put together in a fun way.
Rotterdam
Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum is one of the most fun museums for the whole family. For example, you can visit the children’s exhibition “Splash! Visit.’ Children are immersed in a fascinating (under)water world where they playfully discover that they themselves can influence their environment. This exhibition makes the museum even more attractive for families.
Soest
The National Military Museum
The National Military Museum may not be the first thing you think of, but this museum has something for everyone. Inside are six themed rooms where you can learn all kinds of things about our Armed Forces. For kids, there’s plenty to do, too. Look inside a real F-16 or tank and learn the NATO language. In the Xplore room, kids can get to work on their own.
For example, did you know that at the National Military Museum you can ride in a tank yourself? A cool mini-tank that is! Grasp the sticks firmly and tear yourself along the challenging outdoor course.
Utrecht
The Railway Museum
The Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht is also a fun day out! Become a train expert in the TechLab, travel to faraway places and take part in spectacular activities. The museum has regularly changing exhibitions and special programs for different age groups. You can take the shuttle train from Utrecht Central Station – that’s a super fun start to your museum visit!
