Road trip through the Netherlands
Suppose you have a day or a few days off. You want to do something fun, but the weather is not quite cooperating. Then go on a road trip through the Netherlands! The Netherlands has beautiful areas to drive through. We have listed our favorites for you.
The Hunebed Highway in Drenthe
The Hunebed Highway is actually a normal provincial road in Drenthe, but what makes the N34 special are the hunebeds that lie alongside it. As many as 47 of the total 53 hunebedden located in the Netherlands can be found here. The Hunebed Highway is part of the Hondsrug, an area that bears many features of the Prehistoric Ice Age. You can make a stop at the Hunebed Center in Borger during your road trip along the Hunebed Highway. An educational and fun stop, even with kids there! Look for more prehistoric sites in Drenthe in this blog.
The Middenveld route in Drenthe
Another fun route to drive for your road trip through the Netherlands is Drenthe’s Middenveldroute. This route is over 75 km long and takes you through the most beautiful areas of Drente, including pine forests, heaths, fens and of course the famous drifting sand fields. The route also passes by Westerbork which is definitely worth a stop. The complete route and description can be found on the website of the ANWB.
The Castles Route in Friesland
Are you vacationing in Friesland and love castles? Then the Castles Route in Friesland is ideal for your road trip through the Netherlands. This route passes six beautiful castles. Among others, you will pass by the Poptaslot in Marssum, De Vogelstate in Jelsum and Het Princessehof in Leeuwarden. Many of these castles can be visited, so you have a nice stopover to make.
The Frisian Lakes Route
The Frisian Lakes Route is a 120 km route that takes you past all kinds of picturesque Frisian spots. And of course you pass all the beautiful Frisian lakes. You will pass through the village of Terherne, known as the Kameleon village. Blogger Ingeborg wrote a nice blog about it earlier in which she followed in the footsteps of Sietse and Hilke, the Chameleon twins. But you also pass through Joure, Oudega and Sneek. You can find the ANWB route here.
The Groningen Good Route
The Gronings Goed Route is 145 km long and passes a number of interesting places and museums. Furthermore, the car route takes you past typical Wierden, Dijken, Sluizen and Maren. Really something for your road trip through the Netherlands! Also fun for kids, because you pass the DoeZoo in Leens where you can see reptiles, mammals and birds. Also fun is the Seal Center in Pieterburen. Or go back in time at the Open Air Museum Het Hoogeland in Warffum.
The legend route through Overijssel
Overijssel is full of sagas and legends. For example, the Ghost Hare, the Hellhound or the Devil in the Cowhide. All these legends belong to the intangible heritage of our country, so it is definitely a must to drive the Sagenroute! Pass beautiful 17th century half-timbered houses in Ootmarsum, drive past the haunted Singraven Estate (read more in this blog) and atmospheric Oldenzaal.
The Delta Route in Zeeland
Always wanted to take a look at the impressive delta works of our country? Then don’t miss the Delta Route in Zeeland on your Roadtrip through the Netherlands. During this route you cross the water several times. Among other things, you will pass through Deltapark Neeltje Jans, the Zeeland Bridge and A Seal Seal Sanctuary and Expo Stellendam.
The Lek and Linger route in South Holland
The Lek-en Lingerroute is a true forts route. You’ll pass several forts (including the Fort near Asperen and Fort Tienhoven) and castles (such as Vesting Vianen), all of which are part of the Dutch Waterline. But in addition, you also pass beautiful farms, floodplains and orchards. The route is 105 km and can be found here.
Mergelland route in Limburg
Finally, a beautiful road trip through the Mergelland Route in Limburg. Here you really imagine yourself abroad. The route is 112 km and takes you along all the highlights of the Limburg Hill Country. Along the way you can take a break at a cozy terrace in places like Epen, Eijsden and Slenaken. Please note that the Heuvelland Route can only be ridden in one direction. The starting point is Maastricht train station. Really a nice route for your road trip through the Netherlands!
