Spring is here! So how nice is it to bring a picnic basket full of goodies? We have listed the nicest and most beautiful picnic spots in the Netherlands for you. Here you are guaranteed to enjoy being outside and each other. These are our picnic ideas:
Ackerdijkse Plassen
Close to Rotterdam, in Pijnacker-Nootdorp, is a hidden gem. The Ackerdijkse Plassen are a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle. You can enjoy walking here, but also have a great picnic.
Midden-Delfland
Another place where you can leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind you is the green area in Midden-Delfland. Midden-Delfland is found near Rotterdam and The Hague. You can do great hiking and biking here, as well as picnicking! So bring your blanket and enjoy the peace and quiet around you!
Palace garden The Hague
Between Noordeinde Palace, the Royal Stables and the Royal Archives, is very well hidden a beautiful posh park. The Palace Garden is just open to the public. You can have a great picnic here while enjoying the centuries-old oak trees, flowers and ponds. Because the Palace Garden is not yet well known to the general public, it is wonderfully quiet!
Park Clingendael The Hague
Another beautiful, peaceful spot in The Hague is Park Clingendael. Here you can have a really lovely picnic. You can picnic in the woods, but you can also choose to lay down your rug near the monumental building or on one of the other grassy spots, for example along the water.
Island of Brienenoord
Another hidden gem you’ll find in Rotterdam. Well entrenched behind an industrial area is the Island of Brienenoord. A green oasis in the middle of the busy city. Because it is located on the Maas, you can have a nice picnic by the water. Eiland van Brienenoord is a beautiful nature reserve full of birds, butterflies and if you’re lucky you’ll even see Scottish Highlanders!
The Roof Park in Rotterdam
Rotterdam has another very nice and special picnic spot. A very special one too! This picnic spot can be found on the roof of BigShops shopping center at Vierhavenstraat. With its 1200 meters, the Roof Park is the largest roof park in Europe! You can have a nice picnic and you can even barbecue there!
The picnic spot of The Strange Bird in Vlaardingen
The Strange Bird is a super fun place in Vlaardingen. Not only can you vacation there but you can also do all sorts of things! For example, there is a fantastic escaperoom (which is very suitable for children), games and lunch. But also picnics! There is always a relaxed (vacation) atmosphere!
Amsterdam forest
Picnicking in Amsterdam’ s Vondelpark is cozy, but mostly very crowded. If you want a quiet picnic in Amsterdam, it’s better to go to the Amsterdamse Bos. There is no less than 1000 hectares of nature in the middle of the city! Then also pay a visit to goat farm Ridammerhoeve. Unfortunately, the goat farm is still closed, but the store where they sell all kinds of goodies is open! You can use those goodies on your picnic! Do bring your debit card.
Wilhelminapark Utrecht
For those who live near Utrecht, Wilhelminapark is a good base for a nice picnic. This monumental city park is beautiful green full of old trees and a beautiful fountain. You will come here to completely relax. So bring a picnic blanket and goodies and enjoy!
Fill the picnic basket with lots of goodies
To make it extra special, you can also turn the contents of the picnic basket into something special. And no, this really doesn’t have to be very complicated! So no sandwiches and packs of lemonade for the kids, but (healthy) treats as picnic dishes. And you can also spoil the adults a bit. So a bottle of wine in the cooler is okay. - Wraps topped with some pesto, chicken breast spread and a bit of arugula

- Appetizers such as meatballs, cheese cubes, slices of sausage, olives, tomatoes, grapes, etc.

Checklist for the picnic
Of course, here’s a checklist of what to think about when you go on a picnic.
- Don’t forget to bring sunscreen!
- Sunglasses and caps/hats. Children especially burn quickly on the globe!
- Basket with lots of goodies. Don’t forget to bring aluminum foil to cover.
- Tick tweezers, extraction kit (for wasp and bee stings) and mosquito ointment.
- Rug/large towel. Possibly extra towel to dry son or daughter off with.
- Parasol
- Toys
- Fun book, put that phone aside for a moment!
