Come out in winter!

The winter months are often dull, gray and dreary. But research has shown that going outside and exercising has a positive impact on us. So get outside, even in winter! Visit Utrecht Region wants to inspire everyone this winter with fun outdoor activities around Utrecht. We did some of them and we would like to take you along! NB: we did these activities before the new Corona measures were in force. So during your visit, keep in mind that some activities are not open.
Fun for the whole family!
In the surroundings of Utrecht there are lots of fun things to do with the whole family. For every type of weather. How about an exciting puzzle tour along the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie? There are several tours to do on this route, for example by bike. But imagine it’s raining or incredibly cold? Then choose the car puzzle tour by Puzzeluitje! This tour goes from Gorinchem to Vianen and is super fun and educational! The whole family will learn something! We also did this car puzzle tour and wrote a blog about it. Also don’t forget to take breaks during your trip. For example for a tasty snack at Fort Everdingen or go on an adventure at the GeoFort. But the Waterline Museum Fort near Vechten is also great fun for kids. Do your kids love animals? Then be sure to visit Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen. There you can admire the giant panda!
Take a city walk
A city walk is the way to get to know a city better. IJsselstein has a very nice historical center where several walking tours can be done. For example the Rondje Historisch IJsselstein of In IJsselstein. We too have been to IJsselstein. That was just before Christmas, so we could enjoy the beautiful lights in the city. You can read our blog here. But Amersfoort is also a nice city! We did a Photo Route along all the famous spots of the city. A lot of fun to do and because you are doing something active right away, the places stick in your mind better. We did the photo route Amstersfoort of Tijd voor Amersfoort, where you can find more nice routes by the way. Want to read how we experienced the route? Then click here.
Castles in the surroundings of Utrecht
In the surroundings of Utrecht there are numerous beautiful castles. We’ve already been to Kasteel de Haar where we did a fun treasure hunt with the kids. But Kasteel de Haar is certainly not the only castle in the area. Also beautiful is Slot Zeist. Take a look inside and imagine yourself to be of noble or even royal blood or walk around in the beautiful English garden. Slot Zuylen on the Vecht is also well worth a visit. This is one of the oldest castles on the Vecht and has a beautiful, romantic garden. Want to know what other castles you can admire in the Utrecht area? Then be sure to click here.
Along the old crafts in the Utrecht area
Fond of Dutch crafts? Then you’re in the right place in the Utrecht area! How about the Woerden Cheese Warehouse where the tastiest cheeses await you? For example, book a Cheese Experience for the complete experience. In Leerdam, you’ll find the National Glass Museum and Glassworks. In the workshop you can see how the most beautiful creations are made. And do you love printed fabrics and would like to get started yourself? Then visit the Cotton Printing Factory and take a workshop! This cotton printing office is located in a building adjacent to the Koppelpoort in Amersfoort. We had a nice tour here by Nathalie Cassée, owner of the Katoendrukkerij. Read the blog here.
In short: are you looking for a fun and versatile weekend getaway? Then definitely check out the Utrecht area!
